Mooring or Anchoring on the Alde

Can anyone tell me what the score is with either safe anchorage or visitor moorings as close to Aldeburgh as possible. I have left my East Coast Pilot on board and am trying to do a bit of planning at home.

Plan is to leave SYH on Fri 7 Aug to make the lunch time HW, drop my father off so he can enjoy a pint or 12 in the pub then stagger to his Dascha, then sail back the following day with the wife - I know glutton for punishment, but if the weather improves, will make a nice change to Orwell, Stour, Deben jaunts.
 
I was plannng to go there that week and have had to resort to my old Essex Coast Rivers (as the ECP is on the boat). This shows an anchor symbol on the western side of the Alde just north of the Martello tower a bit before you get to the sailing club and the quay. 3 - 4 metres of water at LW.

I'm planning on picking up a buoy - there are visitor moorings run by Aldeburgh YC (fore and aft) or contact Upsons Boatyard 01728 453047

On a couple of occasions I have found the holding at the anchorage north of the Martello tower to be a bit unpredictable, and I certainly wouldn't want to leave a boat there unattended overnight. When the Aldeburgh Yacht Club fraflys are out in their Dragons it can be absolutely terrifying. Upsons are very helpful so worth giving them a ring.
 
I was there a couple of weekends ago, there are 3 visitors moorings just south of the yacht club on the east side of the river, £5/night. Was a bit exposed in southerly wind due to the long fetch and wind over tide conditions.

There was a large yacht anchored 100m down river of me who had to reset when the winds blew up to 25 knots mid evening.

The boat man from Upsons who collected the £5 said there were some more sheltered moorings just around the bend towards Snape, still within easy reach of Aldeburgh by dinghy.

So worth giving them a ring.

It's high season, so expect it to be busy and you may have to anchor.

From ECP: For moorings, HM VHF Ch 80 or 01728 452896/453047. Upson's Boatyard, phone the first number. Or anchor 150yds S of the club.

I have heard that the holding in the mentioned site near the YC is poor as someone has already mentioned.

Not so handy but a lovely anchorage is upriver beyond the next big R hand bend. You can go ashore at the "Brick yard" quay and walk into Aldeburgh, or just go back down river in the tender?

Hi all,

Looks like the weather is perking up for the weekend, so thinking of slipping down the coast from Tollesbury to Aldeburgh on Saturday morning, back on Sunday morning.

I have downloaded this year's survey of the bar, but it's dated April 09, and various anecdotal evidence suggests the sands are moving frequently. Does anyone have any recent data on depths and best track?

My old Diamond draws just under 5 feet, and I am planning on entering and leaving a couple of hours after low water.

Anyone any recent knowledge of depth and best track from North Weir in?

I am planning a trip to Aldeburgh in my YW Diamond this weekend, planning to enter and leave about two hours after low water, draught just shy of 5 feet. Have downloaded ECR's 2009 chartlet, wondered if the terrain has changed appreciably since April 2009?

Slight drift I know but,..
Went into the Ore on sunday night for the first time- all exactly as per E Coast Rivers website chart. Round the two marker buoys then follow the Orange diamond leading mark into the river. Beautiful river- found a good anchorage in the delightfully named Abraham's Bosom.
Brian Upson was very helpful about finding us a berth fr a few days.
If going in next week note that it is AYC junior regatta week followed by AYC regatta week so could be very busy.
