I'm looking for a new home for my Broom 38 on the Thames for the 2004/5 season -- any recommendations? Currently I'm at Harleyford but would prefer to be further down the river (towards London) and less expensive. Electricity and water would be nice but not essential but she needs dry standing next winter.

Any recommendations, ideally for small friendly yards, would be appreciated as home is Yorkshire so we need a yard who'll keep an eye on her when the river's rising.

Re: eyup!

well, as i said not been there but Phil Cool of suncoast rated it fairly low. The almanac says "fuel barge Leonard is conspic outside the lock" and "City airport is adjacent".

also says its a fiver each way on the lock, so this might be a no-no (in fact, for yorkshire types, a definite no-no) regardless of whether its nice or nasty.

Brentford Dock. It should be easy to get in there as when I drove past it the other day it was bleedin' empty. Dunno if thats a seasonal thing. Why bother with the tideway though, Nearly all the marinas are accessed by a lock which will restrict your comings and goings. Right royal pain especially after travelling down from up norf. And londons a crap hole anyway! I should know I was born there.

Re: eyup!

Rob,

Gallions Point is nasty. Moored there for four months in 2002, was one of only three raggies there...all the rest were you stinkies.
Don't recommend it as it's a pig to get to. Also no fuel!

'tis true tcm. I've only been you Yorkshire a few times, but I've seen every episode of All Creatures Great and Small. So I feel that I am quiet an expert on Yorkshire ways. Whereas, all you chaps from over hill and down dale, have only had the fairly twisted view as portrayed on Only Fools and Horses.

Re: Yorkshire types explained

Pah! "All creatures great and small" is about the countryside, which true Yorkshire people get driven thru every rainy sunday . You aren't allowed to stop anywhere that costs money, or alternatively if somehwere DOES cost some money then you have to stay there all day regardless ofwhether it is crap or not.

Yorkshire is unfortunately full of worthy places that sound great but in fact, esp if you are a child, they are only okay for under half an hour tops. So Stump cross caverns is doable in 15 minutes, rievaulx in about 10 (or an hour if you break the rules and have sword fights, at which point you may as well not be there), Knaresborough for 30 minutes (all spent on a rowing boat of course) or 1 hour if you have illegal splashing fights between two boats which won't happen cos you are from Yorkshire so it'll be a squeeeze into just the one boat and so on and so on.

If it's sunny, then Yorkshire types will take the opportunity to do the garden, which is always rather overgrown due to the rain the rest of the time, and so the gardening turns into a bonfire, which again sounds ok, cept the fire is all smoky cos the leaves are always wet.

Altho i don't watcgh much, you have to admit that fools and horse does have some things right about the smoke: everyone chasing their tails, often financially over-reached, always with no time for anything - so the kids get far more time to do their own thing.

Not sure i wd have a blimmin boat here if i lived at the other end of the M1, doesn't make sense. Not enough rain for a start. Mind you, there is that nice long hack in the car to (qv) inflict on the kids so that's might be the attraction. Four hours each way at max 80mph else Mum will go bonkers or the poxy old car will blow up...

Hi Andrew

I'm at Teddington Harbour - just downstream of the Lock so guaranteed depth with the half lock at Richmond about 15mins downstream. May be a little toooo close to London for you, but excellent - my Targa 33 is around 2200 inc power/water. Can really recommend both the setting and the landlord!

Only problem for u may be that there's no hardstanding if that's a real issue.
