Mooring locations in Medways?

Where would one be able to keep his boat while living on it in the area? It didnt seem very liveaboard friendly, and I am very sad about that because I just moved my boat down here and wanted to put it in the lovely Gillingham Marina!

Anyone know anything?

You could try Hoo marina on the river Medway . Plenty of live aboards moored in there.

If your boat is smart and tidy, i.e. no containers with plants in on deck, then try Chatham Maritime Marina. There are a number of liveaboards based there.

There are about 30 to 40 liveaboards in Chatham. The staff quoted the official line of no liveaboards, but provided you are descreet you will be fine. The boat moored alongside mine is a permanent liveaboard, the one directly across the pontoon is one, the next row has one close by, the row the otherside of mine has at least two, etc, etc. The marina has plenty of empty berths and last year they had flashes adde to their signs advertising berths available. Just book a berth and stay onboard.

But yeah. I just book a berth here in Gillingham marina (cause Im already here) and just do so.

You could try a bit further afield, like the River Swale, Faversham Creek for instance

Those are probably great spots, but I try to stay in the area. Good advice otherwise cause I know both marinas personally.

Ramsgate don’t have an issue with live aboard craft, there’s certainly an eclectic mix of craft providing accommodation there.

Going under the radar appears to work in the other marinas as long as you’re not a PITA - bikes, bbq’s, step ladders etc on the pontoon, hanging washing out, plant pots, never taking the boat out, being ‘at home’ and talking a lot every time your neighbouring berth holder arrives, flappy tarps etc etc.

Having said that the new card systems at Chatham should make it easy to work out who’s there 7 days a week. What they’ll do with that information is anybody’s guess.

If you’ve already mentioned living onboard to the marinas, you’ve shot yourself in the foot I’m afraid.
