With an intension to upgrade to a proper yacht sometime between now and (more likely) the end of next season I am figuring that finding a safe and affordable home could be more challenging than finding the yacht itself ... and that I should be taking some action now. An initial internet search reveals a confusing picture of harbour authorities, river authorities, private moorings, sailing clubs, raffles, draws separate registration for many different areas within the same river and 15 year waiting lists, Aaahhh!

I think my requirements are ... easy access from the M5 / A38, safe car parking, 25 - 27 foot, bilge or shallow fin, sheltered, winter storage ashore with DIY facilities, probably Plymouth area or R Dart if car parking was available (dream on?). Social aspect of a club would be good ... especially if it also offered me the opportunity to start racing my Laser again .... And I wouldn't mind if something came up sooner as I could put the Gem Micro on it next summer (assuming I haven't found a buyer by then)

I need a strategy ... help!

Plymouth is good if you can find a berth, most marina's are over subscribed though and ours (Yacht Haven) have a four year waiting list. There is also a large number of Sailing clubs, most who welcome new members with open arms.

Yes, Plymouth's good and not as far as Falmooth. Try up the Tamar, around Cargreen &c. or, if you want somewhere really special, have a look at Newton Ferrers and Nos Mayo just east of Plymouth - great club, several good pubs and restaurants and a splendid community - truly captivating.

Like the other posts, my suggestion would be to try one of the Sailing Clubs in Plymouth? I am not suggesting that you will get a mooring straight away, but the sooner you get your name on a list the better. You might find that there is a spare mooring that you can borrow in the meantime. Saltash Sailing Club would appear to meet all the requirments on your wish list. pm me if you want more details or other club suggestions.

You could try Mike Hooton at Weir Quay Boatyard - well up the Tamar - for a swinging mooring with all tide access but an hour or two from the sea (but at least batteries are usually charged when you put her away).

Don't be put off by long waiting lists. Sometimes shorter boats get in quicker, with the average new boat struggling for a 40 foot berth. Ask around for specifics first.

Have you tried the Exe? I for one have a swinging mooring privately owned and probably up for sale, for about £900, costs in the region of £200 for annual service and £120 licence fee. Exeter quay is good for maintenance just a quick trip up the canal. Easy access from M5 and A38 and Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club have parking space for members.

Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club! Just the other side of Tpt ferry. Join (£28 family) and get your name down for a swing mooring. Been there for 2 seasons now. Very friendly and convenient - car parking, tender storeage and outboard shed etc. Contact n.bunker@btinternet.com (Moorings secretary).
