The following is a quote from the Premier Marinas website:

"Premier Marinas Ltd acquired AH Moody & Son Limited and all its subsidiary companies on 20th December 2005.
Premier has been operating since 1988 and owns marinas in Brighton, Chichester, Falmouth, Gosport, Port Solent and Southsea.
Premier is delighted to be able to integrate the 300 berth marina at Swanwick into the Premier Group and is also looking forward to the new opportunities that the other parts of the Moody business will provide to expand its services to Premier customers.
Operationally, it will be very much business as usual. Other than the Directors, the current line management structure remains the same with one exception. Glyn Davis, formerly Marina Manager at Premier’s Chichester Marina will become the new Marina Manager at Swanwick.
Premier is committed to providing the very highest standard of facilities and service to customers and will build on the Moody reputation and tradition and invest to take the business forward into the future."

Sounds awful . . .

Why so? I'm only an occaisional marina user but I've found Premier's staff at Chichester and Southsea to be extremely helpfull. What do the berth holders at Moodys think of this?

sad day for me .... Moody Yachts .........

Classic name .....

Sad day for me too, Glyn Davis is a good marina manager and now going elswhere /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As far as Swanwick is concerned I imagine it's a very good thing, Premier are propbably the best marina owners in the business and have made massive improvements to all the marinas they own. And the instant win for Swanwick berth holders is that from Jan 06 they'll be paying cost price for their fuel and they get 12 night free berthing in all other Premier marinas.

I'm curious, what makes premier the best marina owners in the business?

Err, their marinas?? And above that their staff are second to none.

I'm speaking from personal experience, I've used most marinas along the south coast and Premiers are without a doubt the best run.

I've recently moved away from Premier after being in Brighton and Port Solent for the last 2 years. I agree that they do run things in a friendly and efficient way and do improve the marinas they buy. Brighton is a great example of that.

Having said that, they did have a major blip last spring on hauling boats in and out - I was delayed over 6 weeks with the local boatwrights up in arms with the ineptitude - all supposed to be sorted now.

The takeover has been an open secret on the River for a while now.
Personally I have little to criticise with the Moody's staff, just treat them the way you would like to be treated yourself and they respond very well - good facilities too.

The Gosport Marina facilities are totally inadequate for a marine that has doubled in size since its original C&N days. Mooring costs were racked up for several years at well above inflation on the back of promises for much improved facilities that have yet to materialise. The best scrubbing facility in Portsmouth harbour was sacrificed to make way for a larger car park that seems to be used as much by people visiting the town as berthholders. Local staff are Ok but Premier still need to deliver better facilities for berthholders.

But it has improved since they took it over - no? And as for the mooring fees going up over several years, I believe Premier have owned it for less than two years?

Not really! All facilities are temporary portacabins. The number of showers available now is less than when the marina was half the size. You need to stand in the shower for five mins just to get wet ! The Ocean View Cafe is OK if you want a quick bacon sarnie but C&N used to operate a bar and at times a pretty good restaurant. The cost of fuel is highest in the Solent - why ? Car park is used as a pay park by anyone visiting Gosport -why ? Security is lacking with free access to pontoons during daylight hours. I accept that promises re facilities were made by the old C&N company however Premier have shown little desire to invest in improvements to the existing facilities.

Re: ...subsidiary companies?

Wisely, they have incorporated the various aspects of their business as stand alone companies: marina, boat sales, construction, decking & fittings, electronics etc etc

In your dreams and rose tinted specs

The bar and restaurant in the C&N days was appaling at best. I quite agree that the temporary cafe ain't that good but there is brilliant greasy spoon outside.

The main problem is with the planners, and the immediate property situation, who make it very difficult for the owners of that marina to plan ahead. Why do you think Nick Maris sold it? The pontoons are tremendously improved, the fuel pontoon ditto and the staff are excellent. Now that the latest shenanegans next door have stabilised briefly maybe Premier will be able to plan. As for the drying out facility.....it was so rarely used that the old adage applies. If you don't use it you loose it. As regard parking are you suggesting that berth holders can only use it if they are on their boats? Interesting piece of enforcement that would be. Are you on the bertholders committee?

Re: ...subsidiary companies?

Actually I still haven't seen anything definitive to say that Premier have bought Moody everything. There's been some questions about this on the Moody Owners website, and nobody seems sure at this stage whether 'all subsidiaries' includes Moody Yacht or not, for instance, because (obviously) it depends on how the companies were structured.

I have been a berth holder at Swanwick for the past 5 years and have always found the staff to be courteous, friendly and pleasant. In all my time at Swanwick I have had two problems, both of which were sorted very quickly and without fuss.

I will be interested to see what improvements Premier make.

They will probably up the berth charge by 25% as they have just done at Chichester etc for new contracts. Reduced uplift for existing but for how long?
