Monohull floating upside down - 'lucky' solo survivor after 16hrs Galicia

Of course. There are lots of ways to kill a cat... All require making the damn boat stronger.
It’s an all out race boat, not a cruiser. Like Formula 1, need to push limits a bit to win. Most times engineers get it right, but if any materials, fabrication or calculation defects occasionally it will go wrong. Racing risks.
Oyster cruiser a very differnt matter

Do wheels and structurally important bits break and fall off Formula 1 cars? I thought they had learnt how to do safety extremely well.

Looks like it might be a canting keel ?
No. It’s a class 40. Fixed keel.

They’ve recovered the hull, so the cause will be known at some point.
This was a brand new boat, but the class 40s have been around for a while, and done some serious mileage including RTW, so it’s not like there isn’t a well proven method of fixing this type of keel already in use. Will be interesting to see if this boat had deviated from the norm in terms of keel fixings.

Why don't the BBC have done with any pretensions to journalism and employ GCSE media students? 26 nautical kilometres from the Sisisigas Islands? In the Atlantic. FFS.

Because they don't have any pretensions to being sailing or maritime specialist. The report probably gave the original in nautical miles, then some sub-editor has got to it and applied the style-guide determined conversion to kilometres.
It's easy for anyone with a little knowledge to go through a generalist newspaper and find fault with their specialty subject.
Yet I never see those same people able to cover a war one day, a financial crisis the next and a political scandal on Friday.

French sailor survives 16 hours in capsized boat in Atlantic

The single-hander aboard was rescued.

I'd love to know the make of boat and the mode of failure. Looks like a very clean slot where the keel parted - perhaps it's a lifting keel?
It's an all-out prototype race boat, so presumably a lead torpedo on the end of a long fixed slender strut. Possible brittle fracture or fatigue but I doubt they will be publicising their findings.

not really...

Class 40 is basically a box-rule boat that has many limitations on construction method.., appendages.., etc. to keep the costs reasonable

Pogo is on their 4th generation of the class 40 - they are building what is close to a production boat.., and it is competitive
