Mobo's- Love 'em or loath 'em?

In the years I've been sailing I can only think of one berk in a gin palace that I would cheerfully have thumped but there was a fair sized queue in front of me so I left him to the lynch mob and went back on board to clear up the mess he'd caused by ploughing up and down the harbour at half chat..

All the rest have been just fine with plenty of them slowing to a crawl as they pass us.
 
Generally speaking all boaters are pretty OK types.
(with the sole exception of jet ski's, & they are all accidents looking for somewhere to happen!)
 
Disagree about jet ski's .. they are not "all" accidents waiting to happen.. Some are quite capable.. some are even considerate:rolleyes:

OTOH... I know a chap,who got to a rich part of his life and started sailing... fine you say, but he bought a J120 and started racing... quite honestly, he did not know much about sailing boats or about rhe rules of racing... or even basic colregs.. he was downright dangereous..

But to give him credit.. he soon learned that he needed to learn a lot and set about learning...
 
Things that do annoy me here (in the Med) are the few (and they are just a few) mobo owners who will see that you're entering a crowded anchorage or port and will race past you to grab the best/only spot for themselves. Human nature I suppose, but darned annoying just the same. Also large mobos who insist on passing just a couple of boat lengths away forcing us to turn into their wake or risk having the boat rock like a....erm....rocking thing. But in port they are of course just a different type of boat user. Mostly.
 
Having been both raggie and latterly stinkie, it's obvious there's good and bad on both sides. Before this turns into an "all mobo drivers are descended from the devil" thread, I will recall a visit to Yarmouth. It was a bank holiday, and the Solent was like the M25 - boats of all kinds approaching from the East and the West. We all slotted into single file line astern in turn for the final approach to the harbour entrance. I was concentrating on the yacht ahead of me when SWMBO said "have you seen this yacht". ""Yes" I replied rather curtly "of course I can see the yacht" assuming she was talking about the one in front

"No" she said "THIS yacht" and pointed to a boat coming at us at 45 degrees. It pulled directly in front of me and jumped the long queue - I had to do an emergency stop, as did all those following, who scattered in all directions. I shouted some abuse, and got the single finger salute. I was apploplectic, beside myself with rage, so much so I couldn't even tie up when we finally got alongside.
So guys and gals, it happens to both sides. I voted "Just a different way of being afloat" but on that day I could happily have committed murder!!

PS after a two year boating sabbatical, we'll be back later in the year, or early next, but with a rag and a stick again. Bav 34 or similar.

Then there would need to be a ' some raggies are better than others' poll..

Got to say that I've encountered a fair few sailing folk I'd happily strangle but only one stink pot driver, then again mobos are pretty rare beasts round here.

They where fun to watch though:
1) There reaction to the photo, immediate speed reduction.
2) Watching them go through the Dinghy Fleet,
a, The guy on the Fly bridge of the motor boat was using hand signals and shouting to tell the dinghy's what to do, from what I could see..
b, The three Ribs (A third raced in and joined them, all commercial) ended up pointing across the river...
 
Mobos are inanimate objects, well most of them are at Brighton Marina :) it is the prats that own them that are an absolute pain. I own a motor boat btw. not a 'mobo'

That's not all they miss. Last month coming down the Sound of Mull I passed a big mobo coming up kicking up a huge wash. Playing in the wash were a couple of dolphins - putting on a great display and leaping well clear of the water at times. The mobo driver was completely unaware of this since - of course - they never look back.

If we were to pick a stereotype for that behaviour wouldn't it be a group of middle aged german blokes in a 48' charter sailing yacht? Engine on of course...
 
I have to confess that I'm toying with the idea of a mobo, as I realise that I can trailer one, get out and fish with the kids and actually go to some of the places I want. For our purposes, it may actually be a more practical option. Someone pass the smelling salts...
