I used to do it myself on masthead rigs buy now have a bendy fractional setup.

Hi Long Keeler,

I guess most riggers are used to travelling to a job, but would lrobably charge you for travelling time, so someone near where your boat is based would minimise the travel cost. A hint as to where you want the rigger to travel to would be helpful. Barring that, I use Evolution Rigging at Suffolk Yacht Harbour and have been happy with their service.

A full rig set up will include going for a sail in a fresh breeze - do you want thaf or just a static tension check?

From past experience, riggers aren't always the best people to go to. Many years ago on the Clyde, Saturn Sails were the go-to people for rig tuning. The local riggers were more about the engineering aspects of rigging, rather than tuning it.

Invest in a couple of Loos gauges (the pro version is much better) and have someone give you some guidance. I can probably help depending where the boat is. It'll save you a deal of £ and is interesting too. Failing that I'd recommend Richard at Evolution (Suffolk Yacht Harbour).

While that's true, Evolution Rigging is owned by renowned sailmaker John Parker of OneSails and operate from the unit nexr door to the sail loft. There's not a lot they don't know about how to set up a rig and they cooperate on projects like rigging and sails for Spirit Yachts.

Thanks for the replies.

In the past I have used Greg at Brightlingsea and Simon Whitehouse who I think was located around Wrabness way. Both being riggers at one time or another. Simon does not seem to be available in recent times and is probably doing other things. I'm only after a static rig tune .

Hi,

If that's all you're after. I tend to agree with the Major, it's a pretty easy DIY either with a Loos gauge or by the Selden *folding rule method*, for which you need a folding rule and a Vernier gauge (I find a metre long piece of dwelling easier than the rule - it doesn't fold up on you).

Whichever way you measure tension, it's worth reading Selden's hints and advice document, available on their website. It describes clearly the way to set up both masthead and fractional rigs. The only matter it doesn't help with is selecting mast rake.
