If using a 3g dongle

(Thanks Grehan, nicked your image)

How long an extension could you put on without getting an unacceptable loss of signal.

In this house 3g is available at the back, but not the front /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Its just a USB cable - all the workings are in the white plastic bit - so no need to worry about phone signal loss the issue is with vlotage drop over a longer cable I believe

Using a standard USB cable they normally say about 5m is the max - however if you "daisy chain" hubs together or get a powered USB cable you can get upto about 30m with a fair wind !

Any thoughts on who is a good service provider. My phone is on 3 but the coverage is patchy to say the least. I can not get a signal at home.

Vodafone have the highest coverage of all the providers in the UK, and the best call success rate too!

Biased opinion mind you, I work for em /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

There's a couple of ways to buy one. If you sign up for 24 months then it's free and you pay £15 a month for the data, max 3gb.

They sell like the proverbial hot cakes, customers love em cos they work and there's no set up.

I've got one and it works out at sea aswell /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

pm me if you need anymore ok,

Andy

My old man uses one on his Nimbus for the laptop and at home, working away etc... slow compared to broadband (of course) but usually works pretty good and the vodafone coverage is pretty good in the south coast.

Sounds good to me!

I'll swap you a USB modem for the S38, everyones happy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll even pay your bill, now you don't get that at Orange now do you!

[ QUOTE ]
who has best coverage in Greece/Turkey

[/ QUOTE ]3G coverage is still very patchy in Greece/Turkey. I guess you can get it in the bigger cities Athens/Istanbul. However, I have failed to get a signal in the Bodrum/Marmaris/Gocek/Fethiye area. Vodafone is allegedly building a new network but I have not seen much results yet. The old technology GPRS/EDGE is very well covered though. I have been in very remote bays way away from anything and still the GPRS signal was very strong. I am on the AVEA network but Turkcell is supposed to have an even better coverage. In Greece it is the 'OT' network which is supposed to be best. It is at sufficient speed to get emails and look at web weather pages. I am not sure you need 3G if you are not a very serious web surfer. There are nicer things to do at anchor in a small Turkish bay than surf the internet.

Hi Andy,

I was enquiring today about getting one of these - seems to be an offer for business use of 5GB / month fair useage (i.e. no out of bundle charges - just a slapped wrist and don't do it again ...) - for £20 + VAT

Interested in vodafone for the extensive coverage - as I'm interested in W coast of Scotland where most coverage is poor.

I don't expect to see a lot of 3G - but for emails etc I understand it falls back to GPRS. Chap on the phone said that this would be an average speed of 384 KB/sec (i.e. 7 times an old 56K modem).

As GPRS is dependant on the number of channels allocated for a given connection the speed can vary as I understand it - so I asked what the worst case would be - and he said about 50KB/sec - i.e. approx the same as an old dial up modem.

This actually seemed quite good to me - as I thought it was slower.

However I was wondering if you could confirm these are realistic figures (seeing as you aren't trying to make the sale /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Many Thanks

Beware the roaming charges for 3G outside the UK. Not cheap at £8.50 per 24 hours. If you just want small downloads, why not use your phone as a modem with GPRS. I download weather from movingweather.com in Spain via GPRS for a few cents using a Spanish Sim.
