Anyone tested a MOB AIS with a Furuno MFD plotter? I have a McMurdo M10 transponder linked to the MFD with NMEA 0183 and want to know which/if a MOB AIS will work before I buy.

Did it work and which make of MOB AIS do you have?

Thanks
Dave

Think the result depends on which plotter you have, and its software level. Older Furuno displays either showed nothing, or only showed an ordinary AIS triangle, I believe, whereas newer levels of software enable the display of an MOB symbol.

Thanks. Having looked on the Furuno USA forum it is not clear if the MFD(new 2010) with the latest software will show MOB, they say it will work on certain AIS units. Is this just down to the AIS sentence type the transponder issues or the plotter software or both?

No idea, it seems that Furuno didn't really consider the problems of supporting AIS SART messages.

The AIS SART transponder sends a vessel type 14 for a MOB and 15 for a Test IIRC. The issue will be how Furuno handle those - either plotting the correct symbol (great), a general AIS target symbol(not perfect but not bad), or not plotting it (not much point having the transponder if its yours!) Doubt the AIS receiver is filtering them out

All current AIS SART transponders will emit the same 14 & 15 codes. So your issue is how the plotter handles it.

They're talking rubbish then, since all AIS beacons send the same signals, and all AIS receivers just convert the radio signals into NMEA and let the plotter decide what to do with them.

As ShinyShoe says, there is a test mode for these beacons, so the best option might be to see if you can borrow one and try it out with your plotter. Maybe even buy it from a shop on the understanding that you can bring it back if it doesn't work - I think your odds are fairly good if Furuno say it will work with "some" AIS receivers.

Thanks. The exact statement from Furuno USA Forum moderator is;

"At this time I cannot guarantee that the McMurdo Smartfind S10 will work with NN3D. I can only say that it should work. The Kannad Safelink R10 that I tested is made by the Orolia group which also makes the McMurdo products (they own both companies). The McMurdo S20 is the same unit as the Kannad R10."

I just wonder why the lack of confidence from the moderator if all AIS SARTs issue the same 14 and 15 codes?

Because they don't want you to sue them if they say it will work and then it turns out not to. I don't make definite statements at work about things I haven't tested either.

That statement sounds pretty positive to me.

NN3D has had at least some SART capability since v2.11 ( http://www.furunousa.com/ProductDocuments/NN3D Version History (v2 11).pdf ) which version are you on?
I'm not sure thats EVERYTHING I'd want my several thousand pounds of plotter to do, but it will display an icon for a SART and its shown with the MOB symbol. I'd want it to alarm and give me course etc to it and the release notes for 2.11 don't mention that. It might be dead easy to click the MOB symbol and nav to it which only raises the would be good if the AIS SART is activated to alarm on the plotter...

Thanks for this. I have updated to 2.11 so should be able to see the SART icon.

Sorry but Furuno NN3D with SW version 2.11 wont show anything on the display.

I have a still open support case going with Furuno Norway as they have acknowledged a bug in the software but they wont tell if and when this will be fixed...

The problem is that the AIS Sart does not send speed data - and the developers hav decided to filter targets with missing speed.

At first Furuno started a blame game - blaming the AIS receiver ond the AIS Sart.

So we had to set up a little test to prove them wrong.
from my post on Furuno USA forum. http://www.furunousaforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1776&start=10&hilit=knuterikt#p6499

The NN3D re transmits NMEA 0183 data as UDP packets on the Ethernet. We confirmed this by "sniffing" the network traffic using wireshark.
We where also able to configure Open CPN to display AIS data from Ethernet.
Doing a new test with a McMurdo smartfind s10, we found the following.

The AIS sart showed up on Open CPN as alarm and as a target.

But it did not show up on the NN3D (and no alarm)

The Raymarine i70 display (receiving AIS data via NMEA 2000) also sounded an alarm.

Based on this I think we can conclude that

  • The em-trak b100 does transmit AIS sart data via both NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000.
  • NN3D have some strange proprietary way to handle AIS sart (if it works at all?)

There are two types of AIS Sart http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=typesAIS
AIS Search and Rescue Transmitter (SART) | IEC 61097-14

Mobile equipment to assist homing to itself (i.e. life boats, life raft). An AIS SART transmits a text broadcast (message 14) of either 'SART TEST' or 'ACTIVE SART'. When active the unit also transmits a position message (message 1 with a 'Navigation Status' = 14) in a burst of 8 messages once per minute.

  • AIS SARTs are also used in maritime survivor locating devices (MSLD) or man overboard (MOB) devices, as specified inRTCM 11901.1, Standard for Maritime Survivor Locating Devices as well as for AIS locating beacons on 406 MHz EPIRBs. Standard AIS SARTs can be identified by MMSI's beginning with the numbers "970", AIS maritime survivor locating devices or MOBs with MMSIs beginning with "972", and AIS EPIRB with MMSIs beginning with "974". All categories of AIS SARTs will be displayed on IMO-mandated shipboard navigation displays.
Seems Furuno only support the first, but not the MSLD ...
