Does anyone know if it would be feasible to mix ordiniary paint eg emulsion with Blakes deck paint in order to darken the shade. I recently bought 2.5 litres of 'stone grey', but it's far too light, so I wondered if I could add a small amount of black along with the thinner to darken the shade? What do you think?
Any thoughts appreciated to help save me £40 on another tin!

Only a idea! But could you not get a small tin of a very dark
deck paint and add to it!

Think you can but small thingys of colourizer to add to paint from DIY stores,
don't know if these would mix with deck paint though!

G'day Iain,

You can get into all sorts of trouble mixing just same type paint but different brand, and mixing different types of different brands is more than a bit risky.

Have you spoken to Blakes or their distributor, most, but all paints can be tinted for very little cost, but I would check with Blakes first.

I use International Paints most and some of them are very limited in colour choice, and some should be tinted at all according to International, so be very careful.

I hope this helps........

Surely not emulsion paint? They are water based but all deck paints I ever used have been solvent based. Colorisers mentioned by others might be an option but you need to be very careful.

Why is the stone grey too light? My decks are white and don't seem to be a problem.

Shouldn't be a problem so long as the two paints have a similar solvent base. I don't think you can go far wrong if both cans say they you can thin them with white spirit. Certainly you couldn't mix water based emulsion with a solvent base paint. A lot of the specialised paints use very fancy solvents but I don't think deck paint is one of them.

If in doubt, try a small trial mix first. My (limited) experience in darkening paint is that a little black goes a long way, so go easy.
