Mirrors on boats

My Mirror is probably near the age of the boat (40 years or so) and it isn't going anywhere.

To be honest, considering the vast number of jutty outy things, sharp things, wirey things to trip over/bump into etc etc, the composition of the mirror is probably far down the 'safety list'.

We have glass mirror screwed onto the heads door. As far as I know it's as old as the boat (45 years).

So - obviously not a safety issue. I don't see it as a threat to life and limb. But if it did break I would simply sweep up the remains and fit another.

Mine also is a mirror screwed to the back of the heads and again not had a problem - the silvering is beginning to go at the edges but Im not going to replace it yet.

I am nervous about glass on boat. I had to replace the aged mirrors in the heads so I went to the DIY store and bought plastic stick on. Doesn't weigh anything like the one replaced and I still look the same.
It depends on the positioning and whether anything hard and heavy can fall against them.
Having both on my boat I would say that the benefit of an acrylic mirror rests largely on its lower weight (about 40% of the similar area glass). Against this is the fact that it lasts about 65% as long as glass 12 cf 20 years and is far more difficult to polish clean.
I wouldn't have a glass mirror on a door (the hinges will be strained) and acrylic anywhere exposed to sea-spray is definitely unsatisfactory.

A vanity mirror in the heads was the one upgrade Mrs GM insisted on. I bought a cheap shaving mirror from Charlies for a couple of quid. It had convex one side and plain the other. I took it apart and fixed the plain one to the bulkhead with 'no more nails' sticky strips. No risk as far as I can see and a hit with SWMBO.
Interesting. My dear wife has asked that mirrors be removed from the boat on the basis that you are allowed to look grotty when cruising. I take a positive view of this attitude.

[ ........... it took me ages to find the dip stick hole![/QUOTE]

Had the same problem when i was a teenager - much better since I became a man of the world
