Minor Gelocat Repair

Hi,

I have a couple of small chips in my deck that I need to fix. Nothing major but the gelcoat has been chipped exposing the laminate below. Chips only about 2 or 3 mm in diameter.

I spent half an hour gazing at the shelves in the chandlery trying to decide what products to buy to repair this. Came to the conclusion that a small pack of 2 pack epoxy in the "hand soap" type dispensers was the right thing for the job.

Is this what I need ? Any tips for carrying out this sort of minor repair ?

Apologies for the schoolboy question and thanks in advance.

Hello Capricorn

Though the epoxy would certainly do the job it is a bit overkill. Epoxy tends to be used below the waterline. you would also need to paint it as it finishes gray in colour.

There is a gel-coat filler product which finishes white in colour and so may not need further painting

Hope this helps

I have used plastic padding gelcoat filler (Click here) with great success - its basically white car body filler. mix up a small amount fill the hole and it sands really easily. I sanded to shape with 120 grit and then used a couple of grades of wet, wet and dry and then a bit of cutting / polishing compound. You Only need to sand in total for a couple of minutes to get a really good finish.
