Would it be ok to wash the main with a mild bleach solution without causing any damage?
Thanks in anticipation of any replies

it should be ok to use a chlorine solution. I once read the story of a guy who just put his sails in a friend's swimming pool. the bleach used to keep the water free of algae was exactly right to clean his sails in an overnight soaking.

I have an oldish mizzen stays'l which had all kind of diesel-like stains and soaked in a bin full of a 3% chlorine solution. After letting it soak for three days it was more or less clean and apparently it did not suffer from it.

however, if the sails are in top condition, I would spend the money to have them cleaned professionally.

happy sailing

DO NOT use bleach or chlorine on your sails, sorry to shout but the are costly to replace. I had the same problem two years ago, the gear to use is OXALIC ACID
it sounds dredfull dosn't it, but it will remove all the stains from your sails and no damage including rust, I got mine from the chemists in cowes so I would think you could order some from your local. By the way it is made from the top stems from Rubarb wear gloves as it is poisonous (not a wind up honest). If you cant get any I have some. michael.o-rourke@ntlworld.com

Rhubarb

I haven't tried oxalic acid on sails but it sounds sensible, it is fantastic for removing stains from timber and GRP.

30 years ago almost any chemist stocked it, but it is certainly easier to buy grass, heroin or cocaine in central London than to find a chemist that stocks the stuff now.

I gather the rot set in when some do-gooder in Essex managed to ban its sale in Chemists in Essex in the 80's because, wait for it, "it is poisonous". So is bloody Domestos I told the chemist in Stansted, who agreed wholeheartedly.

Anyway if you know agood dealer, please pass on the info, after all a relibale supply of anything that the Government doesn't want me to have is a must. Of course, rhubarb leaves, lightly boiled, do produce a good solution of the stuff.

Does anybody know if the Government has banned rhubarb?

PS Does your chemist in Cowes sell 75mg aspirin in more than 28 tablet packages?
