Do you suffer from mildew, mould a problem down below.

Well I've discovered a miracle cure, forget miltons, try Dettox mould and mildew remover, comes in a handy spray bottle and does exactly what it says on the bottle. So far it's completely removed mildew from diving equipment, a cushion and curtains without any other nasty side effects.

Would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Absolutely brilliant!

Er...

Dettox Mould & Mildew Remover is actually bleach, but very expensively and attractively packaged! I don't doubt that you've had good results with it, but you could have done the same with a mild solution of household bleach.

Anyone with a serious mould/mildew problem might consider Polycell 3-in-1 Mould Killer (about £5 per litre from B&Q) which contains a couple of very good fungicides and has no bleaching effect. I use it on my canvas sprayhood and teak decks.

I can't verify (its down on the boat) but I'm pretty sure that DETTOX is just bleach solution with surfactants. It works, but so does bleach at 9p/litre. (you can always refill the sprayer, but get the dillution right). Some of the other 'Mould Remover & Prevention' cleaners use a completely different chemical and while similar at removing the mould do seem to keep it at bay for quite a time (eg 6 months).

Any chemists care to comment?

Re: Mildew -on foam-backed vinyl!

Whichever you use, if you have black mildew spots on foam-backed vinyl lining, don't let an enthusisatic helper go spraying and scrubbing. The quickest way I know of to ensure that aging foam backing crumbles and gives up is to try a vigorous clean of the vinyl.

Looks like it Haydn, but still haven't found anything better which axshully works without fading the materials, suspect it's more than just watered down bleach.
