Microphone for a Shoreline compact WR

If you open up the microphone case you should be able to find 2 connections to the microphone itself. You should see something like 100 ohms DC resistance. If you do it is likely tha tyour problem is a broken wire in the cable. Dismantle the plug end and check for continuity from pins through each wire to the push to talk switch and the mic. Movement may make and break the wire. In which case reterminate the wire or even look for a new cable. If the mic is high resistance like infinity then that may mean a bad microphone or a different type to the usual moving coil mic. If you can discern any magnetic field ie by putting it near a compass then it certainly should have a reasonably measurable resistance of the coil. ie 100 to 1000 ohms. If no magnetic field it may be a capacitive mic so no measurable coil and no magnet. In which case I ams tuck for ideas apart from checking continuity of all the wires mic case to plug. Then when you give up ave a noo one. olewill

Hi,
I should have been more explicit, the problem with my mic is due to the connector being broken. There are four wires in the plug, the connector seems to have been caught, bent and broken. I hoped that a basic one button and speak type microphone was a standard sort of fitment.
Not knowing the pin-outs for the connector, I think maybe I should go and buy an up to date VHF, there seem to be plenty out there at sensible prices. I have seen one which looks very good value on EBay, I will post a link to it when I get home tonight to see if anyone has any experience or opinions on it or on any other recommendations.

Most people would never remove the microphone plug. So you could try removing the socket from the set remove the plug from the cord and pass the cord into the set. Put a clamp on the inside of the cord. Then seal up the hole with non acid curing silicon. Or just ave a noo one. (radio that is) olewill

Hmm,
New Jopix VHF arrived, I can't try it out because the mast id down for the Winter. Once the dealer emailled me out a UK version of the manual I realised that the NAVTEX facility isn't quite what I thought it was, the set can display NAVTEX messages, but only if it is connected to a NAVTEX reciever and antenna. As these seem to be about £250 plus the price of the antenna I don't think I will be using that feature. Or the GPS link, as I have bought a GPS doohickie already to tell my netbook full of charts where it is. I ain't buying another one just to tell the radio where it is!
Stil, hopefully the set will be a perfectly functional marine radio, waterproof as well.
