Just got back from an eventful weekend in Chichester harbour.

This morning, I was on my way back to my mooring in the back of the harbour, when i saw two 20ft powerboats on the plane, weaving in and out of the moored boats, I'd recon doing in excess of 20knots. I was on deck lowering the main, and my 8 year old was at the helm. I looked at the lead boat and shouted at him to slow down, he did, but then chose to come over and began shouting and asking me aboard to settle his disagreement with my comment! In all my years afloat, I've never had someone trying to pick a fight on the water!

He then shot off on the plane, under the bridge and into Langstone. We reported the incident to chi harbour patrol, and carried on to our mooring to pack away. We obviously were not fast enough in packing up, as they then came and sat plodding about between us and the shore, presumably waiting for us to get into the tender and head for shore. Thankfully the harbour patrol came and escorted then off so we could get us and three children ashore.

I'm left feeling amazed at the agressive attitude displayed afloat, all over being asked to slow down, i understand speed limits are frustrating, but I've never seen a boat that fast in the harbour, they were obivously out to show off to each other, but wouldn't it be more fun to play outside the harbour?

This isn't a dig at all mobos, as the vast majority i have come across stay at least close to the rules.:D More my amazement at the agressive nature on display from thes guys.

Its a funny old world!

shocking post, horrid menacing behaviour by a pair of complete idiots...

With threatening behaviour like that I would like to think the Harbour patrol would be able to do something more than just escort them away... like ban them from the harbour...? !

think you are very kind to say that it is not a Mobo Raggie thing, but I doubt you would ever get this sort of behaviour from a raggie...

My point is it's not the boat, it's the loose nut driving it :D

I was pleased the harbour patrol turned up, as I was more concerned at what they might do when we tried to get ashore. I.e buzzing round us to swamp the tender. My children are 8,6 and 4, my first concern is for their safety. Unfortunately nothing can be done, however next time I won't say a word, but I will film them :D

Well indeed it is the nut driving it.....

I too would have been very concerned over their "plans" for when you got in your dingy to get ashore... just scary that there are these idiots around who were actually threatening you safety..

Sadly it is best to say nothing, but yes, gather information like boat names etc and report immediately...

I had a similar incident in Poole years ago; didn't dare use the VHF to the harbourmaster as I'd noticed at least one of the speedboats threatening self & fiancee had a set turned on...

Worth having Chichester Conservancy on speed dial, 01243 512301, though I think you were lucky to get any response, maybe things have changed !

Probably worth storing local sailing club or marina numbers too, they may be able to observe and if necessary send out a rescue boat ( ! )

A camera is usually a good deterrent and always useful, I've had chav's threatening my dinghy run like the wind just by pointing and firing a flashgun ( no film ) at them, but if they seem really threatening best to keep it discreet and make sure the flash is off.

If REALLY requiring the police, just mention your handy flare'gun' !!!

Edit to add, NOT anti - mobo, just some chavs.

Unfortunately nothing can be done,

That’s the sad thing because these idiots will think they have got away with it and do it to someone else, did you get the names of the boats? My mooring is in Chi harbour and I'd like to keep an eye out for them, you know give them a special welcome for they come round again. :D

Would you believe it, they didn't have names on them...

One - White diesel powered inboard, open cockpit, with a fetching silver and black checkerboard transom.

Two - again inboard engine, red with a White and black pattern on the sides of the hull.

Around 20-25ft.

No crew on either.

Suggest you step up your security measures for a while in case any light-fingered rascals come and remove bits from your boat.......

I had that thought too, she's coming out of the water on Wednesday.. If they were going to do anything it would likely be today on their return.

There is not much worth nicking, no electronics on board, but if they want to do damage they'll find a way..

Seriously... that is bl00dy outrageous behavior.. again the lawless in this society getting away with intimidation.. disgusting, they should have their boats taken away from them! :(

Aye like removing one of your hull fittings!
You should have reported the incident to the police, and use the hm as evidence that there was an incidence.

For incidents like this a heavy lead weight/lure cast in the direction of their windscreen is brilliant, well fishing could not be classed as an deliberate assault if the speed boat happens to drive into your casting area!;)
I have seen it done on Loch Lomond, the speedboater got the message very quickly and buggard off when the 40g toby hit his windscreen.

Sounds good if you are aboard with a mate or two but not as northwind appeared to be with his wife & children, unless your name happens to be Frank Bruno or such like..

Nice idea, but I don't feel that fighting fire with fire is not really the way to tackle guys like this.

He will get his comeuppance, and besides, he has to live with his very very small manhood, and insecurity complex that goes with it, rather him than me.

10 minutes before this, my 8 year old son got the boat doing 6knots... Made my weekend..

Not aggression but this weekend I was in a mobo in the Solent and changed course to go behind two sunsail yachts which were sailing parallel to one another. I was travelling directly perpendicular to them. When they were about 100 yards past me they both tacked directly back at me leaving me no other course of action but to accellerate to avoid a collision. There were quite a few more nearby so I can only assume they were racing and therefore thought they owned the area.

Great. What happens if the weight misses the windscreen but hits the driver and injures him/her? They may be complete and utter plonkers (OK, they are complete and utter plonkers) but it would be you who ends up in court, charged with assault, or worse.

Countering stupid, inconsiderate behaviour with violence really doesn't help and, frankly, lowers you to their level, imho.

Trouble with people like this is that if Northwind had had a mate on board they probably wouldn’t have said or done anything, it was probably the fact that it was just Northwind and his kids that made them feel brave enough to have a go in the first place. A few years back we had a similar experience with a jet ski on the slip way at Langstone Harbour, dropped the wife and daughter off with the tender and went to park the car, I had a couple friends with me, when we came back found this bloke screaming and swearing at Angie and Jess about how jet ski’s had priority on the slipway, it’s funny how his attitude changed when he found himself surrounded by 3 large angry looking blokes asking why he was shouting and swearing at my wife. I guess it didn’t seem as much fun for him anymore when he realised that his target was no longer a woman and child but bloke who could and would fight back if he had become violent. Bullies are the same the world over, pathetic.

Please, please Flapjack, please tell me you kicked the s**t out of him....it's the only way bullies learn and he'd probably be less inclined to act like that again!!!!
HATE these kind of people... AARRRGGGGGGG

Northwind,

may I apologise on behalf of all right minded sports boaters. I'm glad no harm was done and support the flare gun suggestion (not really ).

Also, sadly, the chavs are chavs wherever they are comment.

There's no hope for some people

Northwind,

I meant to say thanks for your original post, I've mentioned it to local sailing clubs as a warning / lookout.

I still think they ought to sell Vulcan Phalanx gatling guns in chandleries !
