club 19

had my club 19 for 3 years now and think shes a great boat. Lifting keel version. Bought her from scotland and sailing her in Strangford lough. Only problem i have had is the skin fitting in the cockpit sole giving way and the boat taking on water while i was aboard!! luckily this was spotted before leaving the mooring. sails that came with boat were done so i ordered new main/genoa/spi from goacher sails and v impressed. boat goes really well, especially downwind.

Hi Niall b (Monkey Business)

I'm just across the lough from you at EDYC, Quinto. I sailed against you last year at the 2 day event but I think thats the only time. It's a bit of a shame the 3 Club 19s in the lough haven't been out at the same time at any of the regattas etc, but that's probably my fault as I've hardly sailed this year at all.

Nice picks of the boat by the way. The sails look good to. Goacher sails in general seem to be very good.

The only pic of your interior makes it look a lot more pleasant than mine. I still have a light dusting of glass fibre dust all over the inside of the hull after a few winter mods!! How do you find the carpet lining? I've thought of doing this but because the sails take up most of the space down below, I was worried the lining would just get water stained etc. Also, like the idea of a stereo, once I get my electrics sorted, I think I might fit one too.

Hi Farr10,

The carpet was there when i got the boat, it hasnt ever shown signs of water damage etc and seems to work well. It is only on the inside of the hull upto the chart table (on the starboard side) and cooker (on the port side) but extends all the way aft on each quarter berth.

My transom is solid grp. Discovered this out when repairing the lower rudder pintle.

I had some delamination of the main bulkhead which i repaired by grinding back, reglassing and then put a few bolts through for good measure.

I used to race against club coffee when crewing on a ruffian and always we found her hard to deal with in light airs. Raced against her once this year and even though she started late, still beat me over the warer. I was using a ruffian storm jib as i dont have a proper jib.

Not sure whether it is because i have a lifting keel, but i find that the keel picks up weed very easily and only sailing backwards will shift it.

Hi Niallb,

There must be some differences between the boats. One of which is the transom. I had to do a repair around the outboard bracket at the start of the season and the transom has a plywood core. I suspect that my boat is an earlier boat than yours based on the sail number so this must have been changed at some point as others also also mentioned having a solid GRP transom. With regards to the rudder pintle, mine is showing a few signs of cracking in the outer gelcoat but it all seems solid enough. Planning to put a thick stainless steel back-up plate in way of the top and bottom pintles for the beginning of next season.

With regards to the weed problem, it might be that the weed is getting caught slightly at the leading edge just at the hull slot... Looking at your pictures, the angle of the keel looks the same as the fixed keel version so I don't think its anything to do with the geometry of the keel. However, the result of a bit of weed on the keel makes a huge difference to these boats as I have found out on a number of occasions.

They do sail well in the lighter winds, sadly most of the sails I have had in Quinto this year have been just that little bit too much and I am having to start spilling wind when others are just powering up. No problem downwind though. They really need at least three crew to get enough weight on the side.

You had mentioned before about handicaps, our club loves to change the handicaps for club racing. However, they change them far to often and I have absolutely no idea what is a sensible handicap for the boat. I have to admit that I struggled against the heavier displacement boats, e.g. some of the ruffians, in the moderate wind speeds. At the two day event this year, we struggled to stay with the other boats and we should have been in the middle of them. However, we were not sailing that well so I can't blame the handicap too much. Although we had the weed problem on one leg and lost an awful lot in a short distance.
(Sorry for the long post, currently up in the middle of the night with a sick 2 year old so have plenty of time to write a long post!)

Hi Niallb

I wonder if you could explain how you managed to get your club 19 up on the supports.I have just a Club 19 that needs anti-fouling before I can drop her into the mooring and it would be ideal if I could lift her off the trailer to enable me to paint. Mine is a lifting keel version which means initially it's sitting lower on the trailer with respect to the ground,as opposed to a fixed keel which obviously sits higher.Any tips on the procedure would be very helpfull.

Kind Regards

Hi Niallb
I wonder if you could tell me how you managed to get your boat up on supports. My Club 19 is currently sitting on it's trailer requiring antifouling,it's a lifting keel version and there's too many rollers to allow me to paint it as it sits and I'd like to get the keel down too.Any tips would be great.

kind regards

Does anyone have any pictures of the inside of the boat? With the keel up and down? My keel has been boxed in but as I spend a lot of time in tidal areas with the tide out the boxed in area makes the cabin very claustrophobic.

Hi all, we've just bought an MG club 19 which we are now sailing in Poole. Had our first sail and race at the weekend, which went well considering we were still screwing it together on the way to the start line. Overall we were very pleased with the boat and are looking forward to learning more about her. Would love to chat with other owners to help speed up our learning curve, we will probably also have some bits and very good condition (nearly new) sail to sell in due course if anyone is interested.

Regards, Thijs

Fascinating stuff. I am moored on Ullswater and race but just begun. Segue pron....SEGWAY sails well though needs weight of three. Sails better on Starboard than port. Rough and ready below and the fixed rudder is a pain thgough I have now found a 10 feet mooring. Would be very glkad of a look at the spec if you have a copy. Thanks,
Alan.

Re: Club 19

I have owned and sailed/raced a fixed fin Club 19 for a number of years, they are great little yachts and sail well with a crew of three, I also set her up and was sucsessfull with her singlehanded.
They were built in Glasgow by a company called Marine Glass and seem to have been popular little cruiser racers.
If you live in the north Owen sails have the dimensions and Westerly in the south for replacement sails, I do have a copy of the original sails literature which I could scan and post on this forum if anyone is interested.
Mine is currently laid up ashore as I purchased a bigger yacht for family reasons and suitability and intend to work on heer at the end of the season before offering her up for sale.
All in all a great little boat

Hi hopefu1trave11er
I am going to look at Segue tomorrow as she is up for sale here in Edinburgh.
If you ever had any paperwork that would be great... Even any advice on when you had her and how she was to sail.
Thanks
