Exsqueeze me being nosy, Steve, but why do you put the body of the message in the title? It makes the message difficult to read as the eye is used to skipping over the message titles.

Sorry about the fred thrift, just curious. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I wondered why he answered every post with a " ." - thought it was some sort of code /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would have thought that \"old hands\" like you two...

...would recognise a "no message" posting.

And just to get it to post you need to put something in the message box. A dot is just as good as anything else.

The guy was asking about buying meths in portugal or something and nobody had replied. Seemed to me that he would do better on the liveaboards' forum as more overseas members post there.

What is wrong with that?

It's a convention that goes back to pre 14.4 kbs modems were normal, and when 28 and 56 kbs modems came in they were considered blindingly fast.

In those days, anything you could do to reduce bandwith was considered normal, and putting the whole message in the post title, with nm (no message in body of text) meaning you didn't have to waste minutes waiting for the post to open and read a sentence.

Largely historical now, and as you can see, lots of people who have only known high speed modems and broadband don't know this etiquette.

Hardly etiquette - more convention.

It is also redundant when using flat mode as opposed to threaded. You don't get to see a list of headings to see the nm and I don't tend to look at headings in flat mode because people seldom change them when posting these days.

More symptomatic of people not keeping up with current conventions bought about by changes in forum software.

Look at my first sentence, I say convention. Then describe why it was historically etiquette, and I haven't edited.

So you agree that it is "More symptomatic of people not keeping up with current conventions bought about by changes in forum software. " then?

Not really, many here still used nm until quite recently, and some still do. If you read how some people still use these forums, they read post by post, so it still has some validity. Someone was asking this evening about forum format, and still reading post by post.

Disagree...

...the post, which seemed to come from somewhere overseas and possibly via a slow and expensive radio or cellphone link of some sort would benefit from getting re-directed to a more appropriate forum by a friendly suggestion rather than have to wait to load up either the next screen or alot of flat mode.

Which do you think was more helpful to the chap, my suggestion or your sarcasm?

Anyway, I shall continue to use the terminology. YOU don't have to read it or make wisecracks about it.

Ah and thereby hangs the rub.

Who is it, which "Supremo of Fashion" is it that decides when a "convention" becomes "History" in this context?

Sounds a bit facistic to me. Probably related to the dictator who decided that mahogany was out and ash was in; CRT was out and LCD was in (Despite the loss of picture quality and viewing angle). Possibly a cousin of the man who decreed that we should all drive automatics despite what they do to the environment in increased fuel consumption. Then there's Air. Con. Did you know that B&Q are selling those 50:1 to wind gennys? And all in an oh so dedicated to being seen as "Green" country! HA!

Now where were we?

Oh yes, out to the pub quiz.

G'nite.
