Mercury V12 600hp Verado Outboard Engine

The Yanks certainly seem to be staying one step ahead of the Japs, and that is by no means an easy feat as us Brits found out with cars, motorbikes, electronics etc. By comparison, Yamaha and Honda offerings are starting to look a bit staid. Well done Mercury, and it will be interesting to see how the land of the rising sun responds.

An amazing achievement. They are so far ahead of anyone else now, it’s not real. Incredible. Their whole new in house manufacturing process is unreal. Making 4 stroke engines as powerful and as light as the old 2 strokes were. Amazing.

I read it that Volvo bought 7marine to get rid of juicy big outboards that are taking sales away from small/ medium power inboards ?‍♂️

That would be very short-sighted. They must have known that someone else would soon fill the gap if 7 marine were mothballed. I always though VP bought 7 so they could enter the world of big outboards, a world that was clearly having a detrimental effect on their sterndrive market.

Probably Lighter than any inboard and drive train, capable of 600hp ?
Quite possibly true. But;
4 x 450hp (1800hp) = 1252kg
3 x 600hp (1800hp) = 1710kg
Makes no sense to me unless transom real estate is limited. Which it isn’t on boats which manage 1800hp.

I think efficiency and less engines on the back, might be the idea ? Verging into an alternative to inboards traditionally.
Might be worth mentioning the much less frequent service intervals and naturally aspirated benefits.

They have come up with so many innovations in one go.
Can see ips style outboards on the horizon ?
What a beast. Imagine gaining nearly a 1/3 of the interior having either one or two of these on back of a 42ft crusier

But interestingly on the reviews I have seen of the big outboard boats they are just bodges based on stern drive which then extol the virtues of the huge lazarette. It always seems such a waste and total laziness by the manufacture

2 speed automatic gearbox and pod like steering ? - wonder if these features will be transferred to the smaller capacity models
