Mercury/mariner/tohatsu 2 stroke aggro

20 years is a long time to store an engine. Don't forget the vent in the petrol tank cap. The "plastic" pipes will harden in that time and the inside of the tank will attract what we used to call "varnish" that flakes off and blocks the tap.

I do keep forgetting the vent...still

...but I did clean the tank on resurrecting it. Fuel is getting through fine - I forgot the float twice this evening & I lost a lot of fuel before I noticed (the water bin is outside, so dark).

I don't think any 2.2 hp will have a remote tank. In-tank fine filter (bit sticking up inside tank) is a suspect item with those erratic symptoms. A new fuel tap comes with the filter - I fitted one last year to my 3.3 - had similar mostly ran but occasionally wouldn't problem. Could have cleaned the old filter but the tap body was very slightly cracked and leaking.

Thanks, I might investigate new tap for the sake of completeness. I'm pretty sure mine is sound though. I'm also not convinced that there is a filter on the end, but it is hard to see. Also fuel flows freely when disconnected from the carb, to drain it down (or indeed when I forget to put the float in)

I regularly call into Force 4 on my way to the yard.

If I needed anything while I am there I have often gone to Seateach . (They used to be in North street before moving to by the Railway station) but not used them since the name change and move to Thornham . ( will be very handy though as less than a stone's throw away)

I know nothing about Emsworth Outboards

The float needle should be available as a "part" .... at a price!

Not clear from you posts if your engine has a remote tank or just an integral tank. I assumed the latter but if it has a remote tank, as thinwater seems to think, then as he says suspect air in-leakage esp at at the fuel line connector. There will also be a fuel pump, which could be defective, if it has a remote tank.

Force4 is a bit of a detour I think, whereas EYH or Thornham are more convenient. The boat is near Fowley Island. Just looked up Emsworth outboards - they are Mercury/Mariner/Tohatsu dealer with spares :) We can ring these places en route & I'll change the spark plug on the slipway. if I can get one.

I found the needle - not lost, hiding under the float arm in my parts dish. I did however drop it later & spent a while looking for it. Pesky thing.

Fuel tank is integral, so very simple fuel line. I know fuel flows freely as I've disconnected it from the carb a number of times to drain the tank. Also gets to the carb as it gushes out with no float present.

I got a good spark on my quickly fabricated spark tester.
Thank you.

Do check that the water pump impeller is still attached to the central boss as they have been known to come unstuck and then not actually rotate. Of course if you have a flow of water from the tell tale hole you know it is working to a degree.

Yoda

Yoda, tell-tale is good, when it runs...

The engine hadn't really been starting or running since last carb strip, but reassured by all those who pointed the finger at the spark plug, I brought it along anyway. We picked up a spark plug from Emsworth Outboards & I put in & lo & behold it ran. The odd hiccup , but mostly pretty good. For 2 out of the 3 trips. Trip 3, it wasn't interested & I rowed, two-up plus gear, the half mile against the whitecaps in the harbour.

I now have bigger fish to fry (overheated MD2B), so the outboard will have to take a back seat for a while.
Cheers
