it will be electric start only (unless you remove the cowl and use the emergency cord which should be supplied behind the front cover, hand starting a 70hp is something that would build your arm muscles! ).

Search ebay for controls, bits for these engines are getting harder to find, certainly a lot of spares can be sourced from the US.

a 30 second search on eBay turned up these, may well be suitable, you just need to check the connections, these controllers date earlier than your engine;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercury-control-outboard-control-box-side-mount-mercontrol-/330858298504?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_BoatEquipment_Accessories_SM&hash=item4d08b0fc88

and another 30 seconds turned up these controls, which will be better for a 84 vintage engine, however Just thinking aloud, I very much doubt your engine is 1984. It will be earlier than that circa late 70's as they stopped calling them 700's well before the 80's. Get the serial number and it can be dated.

Cheers lads on another note is it a strong good engine

I agree with everything Firefly says above. The 2 control boxes he linked to will work except that neither of them has switches for the power trim. You can either look for a control box that has the switches, or just fit separate switches on the dashboard

No it isn't their strongest engine. Many suffered busted top pistons due to poor cooling, including one that I had. (It's a 3-cyl in line). Check it carefully - it may well be fine and all I'm saying is that it isn't forgiving so there are plenty of poor ones around mixed up with the good uns

Send us pics or serial number and we can date it but as Firefly says it will belate 1970s not mid 80s if it is called "700"

You should be able to download an owners manual if you dont get one with the engine from the download centre at Brunswick marine http://download.brunswick-marine.com/download/main;jsessionid=105vjo07c1lcd?type=corp
Not always easy to find the right one and often better not to search for any particular year model.

There is a year identifier on the same site also one at http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/page/599222 which is sometimes easier to use .

You will find parts lists and exploded diagrams at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/parts.html

It would be good sense to treat it as though its not been used recently and follow the advice for "Awakening a sleeping outboard" on the iBoats forums at http://forums.iboats.com/engine-fre...kening-sleeping-outboard-boatbuoy-158086.html

The Mercury boards on the iboats forums http://forums.iboats.com/mercury-mariner-outboards-25/ and at Marineengine.com http://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/forumdisplay.php?30-Mercury-Mariner-Outboard-Forum would be a good places for advice on any points that are not answered on the YBW forum.

I think JFM is right. If its a "700" then it dates from the late 1970's but the year identifiers above will confirm the year

Unfortunately mine was also a pile of crup, very quiet though . we had 2 weeks on the norfolk broads without too much trouble but then it packed up under the humber bridge with soddin great ships heading at me.

Spent a lot on it but it never really ran again, eventually I was allowed a small amount for a part ex.
The yard kept it with the intention of repairing it but I spotted in their workshop 14 years afterwards, 3 separate mechanics had tried and failed with the project, compression fine, electrical fault of some sort.

changed for a Mariner 55 which weighed less and was actually faster as the mercury 70 apparently wasnt really 70

talk about jumping out the frying pan and into the fire.... parts for a Mercury may be getting rare, parts for a 70's Johnson will be rarer still.

Best of luck.

I would advise saving a few more pennies and getting something that is less than 2 decades old and has all the bits you actually need.

On a small boat, assuming the boat has no sinky sinky type holes in it, the engine is the most important thing. I certainly won't be queuing up as one of your excited mates waiting for a ride on your new boat if one of those is bolted on the back.

Crikey! Are you sure? If 70hp was right, 40hp is too little. The boat wont be fast enough. You are talking now about an ancient motor (it will have a metallic dark green paint colour on the leg if it is early 1970s - does it?) worth £100 if running and as Firefly says above parts will be hard to find

The electric start key switch can be done using generic £5 components. Yon't need johnson's original key switch
