Some time ago my little 2.5hp ended up submerged by some freak winds.

I cleaned it up/flushed it and it's been worked fine since until now.

I'm not getting a spark (tested different plugs - though not the same part numer) so I imagine it's one of three things, or a combination of them. The coil exciter, CD unit, and/or Coil.

Any thoughts on the most likely failure and how to test it? Its not really economical to replace all three of them.

p.s. I've tested continuity on the kill switch and all is good there i.e there is continuity without the kill cord, and none when the kill cord is in place.

The CDI Electronics trouble shooting guide will take you though the testing procedures.

You will however need a meter with a DVA adapter to read the peak voltages . It is a fairy simple job though to make a DVA adapter.

Alternatively an outboard repair shop should soon sort it for you. Your profile does not have a sensible entry for your location therefore not possible to make any recommendations or suggestions.

I think Tohatsu is identical to the Mercury so you might pick up some cheap Tohatsu used parts.
"Also suitable for Tohatsu Mariner Mercury Suzuki 2 Stroke Outboard motors. ..".

Thanks for the info. The DVA is probably beyond me here, shame my clamp meter wouldn't do it.

I knew I should have bought that 9.8 Tohatsu 2-stroke when I had the chance ;)

Yeah - I don't have a sensible location hence the boat. Often hoping about from anchorage to anchorage, country to country. I see a fair bit more rowing in my near future

This is all you need for the DVA adapter

I had a Mercury 3.5, which is the same as the 2.5 but with a larger fuel jet. The CD unit failed (wasnt getting spark) but it was replaced as part of the guarantee; it may be a common fault.

Larger jet? I thought they were the same bar the stop on the throttle and different gearing.

I've been thinking about this and I think the CD or Coil was already on it's way out as had a few strange issues with it before the submerging.

In any case, I found a cheap supply of coil, cd unit, and exciter. So that's will be all the electricals replaced (when I receive them).

The jets are the same, its as you say the length of the throttle slide that decides the hp
