Mercruiser vs Volvo Penta

KevB,

There is only one way to settle this.......

I invite you for a cruise, it would of course be ideal for another Princess 360 with Volvo 43s or 63Ls would also join the test, I am happy to put my twin Cummins-Mercruiser 300 hp along side a P360 with Volvo 63L or 63p (twin 370 HP).

You will see for yourself the difference.

If you would like a mini cruise please send me a pm where you plan to visit next and we will try to rendezvous with you at one of the solent marinas.

cheers
Pete

Kev b the engine is an italian based vm motori unit, not a jap toyota block.

Ah, it'll be the Yanmar that's based on the Landcruiser then?

ONe thing DAKA - is you 360 on legs or shafts?

Princess 360 is on Shafts.

My volvo 41 was on outdrives.

I have cruised many miles with a Volvo 42 on shafts.

When we had volvos we used to close the patio doors before start up.
The only time we rush to close the doors now is when we are berthed near a Volvo that starts up new or old.

Possibly, don't really know about Yanmar, but was is a fact is that the Nanni 200hp engine IS based on the landcruiser block, and a very good and reliable engine it is too.

After market tuning

Does anyone know if there are after market tuners for marine engines.

I have a Volvo D4 260hp, I've been told that they can give up to 300hp from this block but I don't know of a company that re-maps the engine management.

Is it possible on this engine and does any one know where I can get it re-mapped?

I have to disagree with the idea that the mercs are smoother than the Kads. I've been on a windy with 250 mercs and they are noticeably harsher than my Kad 43's. Even the owner of the windy has remarked how much quieter and smoother my kads are? Maybe it's down to my boat being better made than a windy... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Interesting this. My BMB330 was on Mercruiser 220s' and Jez's 330 had Kad 43s'. I found his engines much quieter.

'Ah! sound proofing' I hear you say but no. The Volvos' were quiter with the engine bay open. Both boats were the same model. Kads' had supercharger and turbos, the Mercs just turbos. Performance was the same I thought. but there was a bit more grunt (torque) from the Mercs!

I have no experience of the Dtronic versions but in theory, they deliver more top end power.

Well what have I started, thank you for your comments and such detail - the only problem now is I am still none the wiser. I guess if I had a choice I would go for the volvo only becuase that's what I currently use.

It would seem though based on all your comments there is very little in it and both are good engines. So prehaps I won't concern myself if I see a boat with Mercs.

Again thanks for all your ocmments, very interesting views.
