On a 3ltr mercruiser engine, when trying to start the starter motor just makes a clonking noise most times and motor does not turn .sometimes it connects and starts no problem.
Think the problem is the solenoid which is not always connecting.is this the unit attached to the starter motor or is there another solenoid elsewhere?
Could it be persuaded ,back to life with wd40?

look at the starter motor , is there a short thick wire about about a foot long ? if so it has a remote solenoid , just replace it

The crank signal wire is yellow/red, follow it from the starter and you will come to a relay. Check the connections there and if the other yell/red which comes down from the ignition switch has power every time you crank, if it does and the relay clicks and outputs a signal to the starter the it looks like the fault is with the main solonoid on the starter.
