help needed!!!! just recently discovered a crack in my 1992 3.0 mercruiser lx (running through alpha 1 outdrive) the crack is in the cylinder head, was just wondering as to whether there is likely to be a crack in the block too? we ran the engine afta its winter away, it was winterised but during the winter we replaced the upper gaskets, after starting this spring the oil was white, it also appeared to be shooting out of the carburetor! help!

Bit difficult to comment on really.
What caused crack? Did it Freeze? Are you sure it's not just head gasket gone?
If it froze, you could have allsorts of other problems, cracked water pump, pushed out core plugs etc:
Without having an idea of what caused crack, can't really tell.

many thanks, head gasket was changed, and weve now bought a new head which is going on shortly, the head was tested and found to have a crack, however im unsure if this will fix it, the block didnt freeze and have suspicions that the head was cracked when bought, any advice you can give would be much appreciated, as im just getting into boating on my own. rob

Normally these engines are fairly bullet proof, hence question about freezing.
Only thing you can do is suck and see. Good luck.

Rob - welcome to boating! It really is a great pass-time, honest!! In my opinion, I think what you have found, as many of us have found, is the real reason why someone is selling you a boat (call me cynical if you like). Don't be put off though - as many forumites here will tell you, my boat has cost me a small fortune to repair having bought it. However, I still love it, and still I'm still proud of it, and I enjoy every moment.

Repair it - and enjoy!!
