my engine overheats if i go above 1800 rpm, the alarm goes and the engine cuts out, a few minutes later the alarm stops and the engine will restart.the engine, anyway will not rev any higher than 2000 revs under load though will rev freely up to 4000 revs in neutral.one last point there appears to be oil in the fresh water cooling tank which ,i assume, to be a faulty head gasket(i hope to defer investigation until haulout time).by the way at less than 1800 revs the water guage shows atemp. of approx.140deg.f but will go to 200deg.f at which it overheats. any views would be appreciated, thankyou

I have 2 of these beasts and have experienced most of the points you make. First off if you have the TMP gearbox check the cooling water inlet, take the hose off and check the pipe is clear of corrosion inside, I was also advised to check the small bleed pipe on the top of the water pump. The water in the oil was the head gasket on mine as a result of overheating. The revs are probably caused by course pitch prop - unless you have something round it which I would check before all of the above. If you need parts i have found Westfield 4x4 have always been good.

Jayvcee... no profile so don't know where or what boat?... on a Westerly 33, throwing a 3 blade 18x13 max revs @ 3200. 7.4 knots. Cruising 2200 rpm. 6.2kts, (after 3800 hrs) as previously said if oil in header tank, even money bet, Head Gasket gone and probably not wise to leave to long before sorting. If you can handle a spanner or two, not a difficult job to do in situ. This time last year Merc in N.London still had Head kits for the 160 diesel ( 636) might be worth a call at the Edgeware road. HTH regards & Best of luck Tony W.
