chartering a yacht in menorca next month... never been.... where would you go in 10 days. it's a holiday so don't might a few long trips then relax for a few days.

In 10 days you can get around the island easily including a few days relaxation!

There are so many brilliant anchorages around the entire island that you are spoilt for choice. would recommend the Imray Balearic pilot book and take your pick. The north coast is worse for weather/seas but worth the effort so take notice of the forecast as there is not a lot of shelter - only Fornells and possibly Addaya and you wouldn't particuarly want to try and get into either in heavy seas.

The south coast is more sheltered and plenty of great anchorages along the entire coast - the larger ones being to the west. Mahon is a great base and you can get to some great places in a day (Isla Colom on the east coast for instance)

The whole island is a boaters paradise, you will love it. Please post pics to make me jealous

Firstly have half an eye on the weather forecast as the usual high wind direction in that area is from the north (ie mistral) so make sure you have a good forecast before venturing around the north of the island. Addaya is quite nice (carp marina) but IMHO Fornells is not worth a visit. Ciutadella on the west side is a very nice town but there is no marina, only a short visitor quay which is always full of visiting yachts. North of Mahon, there is a very nice anchorage at Es Grau where you can find shelter from pretty much any wind as you can tuck yourself behind the offshore island but take a large scale chart and don't trust the plotter as not all of the shallow patches are indicated on electronic charts. Other than that, the south cost of Menorca is indented with beatiful calas in which you can anchor but only if the wind is not onshore. Of course, the premier anchorage is Mahon harbour where there are a number of safe anchorages
Another possibility is to cross the channel to N Majorca. Alcudia is a very kid friendly place with a good marina. The anchorage off Formentor is one of the most beautiful in the Balearics but you'll have to pick up a buoy at a cost. Pollensa is worth a visit if you can sneak into the marina

they stopped charging for the buoys in Formentor Bay a few years ago, but of course as its Spain they may well have started doing so again!

We were there in about 2007 and some bloke in a RIB came up and extracted about €25 from us and that was just a lunchtime stop. Of course he could have been an enterprising local earning a living scamming gullible foreign boat owners like me:)

thanks all.... good info as usual. got the imray pilot, but first hand knowlege is best from fellow boaters. we like a mix of marina / anchoring. noted all the suggested places. only a few marina's on the island.
