I have just downloaded Memory Map For All app on my ipad.

I think at least a few forum members use this app.

The app I downloaded was free.

I am looking in the map store, and I am a bit confused - for the UK there are different regions listed for UKHO charts, and all regions seem to be GBP 20.83, but when I click on one of the regions it indicates that the charts are a subscription for the whole of the UK for one year- is that correct? It seems inexpensive. The individual regions do not have a map that locates them, so I want to be sure to buy the correct one.

Also:

I was not surprised that I could download the app for free.., but I figured there would be an in-app purchase needed to make it work.

I have not seen that yet.

Is the a package an upgrade I would need to buy to navigate with those charts? I looked on the website, but I didn't see anything about needing to upgrade the app to sue it for navigation.

thanks in adance

The MMfA app is free, as you have found. Just pay for the charts.
And yes can buy a 1 year subscription for UKHO raster charts for the entire UK for around £25 - I think your £20.83 is pre-VAT.

When I bought mine you could select how you prefer the charts - standard, Quilted, or Quilted HD. I went for the last of these.
The quilted seems to merge the various charts together, which is generally fine but if you want to know the original UKHO paper chart number go for the standard. quilted also occasionally seem to loose the Sources data.
The charts download in 3 or 4 sections - can’t remember precise boundaries but Scotland and Channel definitely different areas, though you have bought access to all of them - just requires going to each area then downloading.
Think can be on up to 5 devices - I certainly have on 3, iPad, Android phone and PC.

Worth also buying the OS 1:25,000 maps if like exploring ashore.

In terms of “using for navigation” you can use as is for simple navigation, and I use as backup for a chartplotter.
If you really need automatic routing, autopilot integration etc don’t think it is the package for you.
If you like raster charts and want a bit more manual navigation facilities AngleNav might suit - though I have not used in anger, just played with it briefly.

It's such a hassle...

I usually use my PC for race navigation, and have charts: C-Map and Navionics for the PC - but of course i can't use them anywhere else... The PC connects to boat electronics, and a stand alone device or backup.

So for cruising, I like the ipad plan and serve as a backup for a chartplotter.

I have bought the Weather 4D app, which is a full fledged ipad navigation solution, and it displays the French SHOM charts beautifully.

But that app wants EUR 75 for the UKHO charts for a year...

i also have inavx and navionics boating

i wish I could just use one app...

Yup agree with all of this, I like Memory Map a lot and am happy to pay £25 per year for the charts. You can plan a route on it and export the file as a GPX, import that into Navionics or Raymarine chart plotter, presumably other plotter brands supported too.

Great value. The App is indeed free, there's no hidden in-app purchases to worry about.

but it will do course over ground, speed over ground.., range and bearing to a waypoint.., record and display a track.., simple things like that?

I'm still on the old MM but it does all that (and more). I use it for all my navigation, Android and desktop at home. Would second getting the OS maps too, purchase rather than subscribe.

+1 for Memory Map.

I use Navionics routinely but planning or entering a new port or anchorage I like the UKHO format. And in tight spots (think Antares charts) it's useful to have two separate devices showing your position.

If I had to choose one it would be Memory Map but Navionics runs on my old, weatherproof tablet.

Does memory map show ais from a WiFi source? Is the add on free or paid for?
I like navionics but tempted to give mm a go.

Unfortunately MM (Android) treats GPS and AIS as a single source so if you switch that source to 'Network' e.g. UDP port 10110 for AIS over wifi it then expects GPS NMEA from that same source and you lose the tablet's internal GPS. Unless I've missed something of course..

Marine Navigator on the other hand will use the internal GPS plus AIS from a wifi source concurrently. I was about to switch from MN to MM as I'm changing tablet and find MN's licensing restrictive (losing licence codes when switching devices etc.), but this rules out MM for me.
