Memory Map £40 UK Charts- any users?

(no snow here but coollllddddd!)

I'm hovering my finger over the 'buy' button on this package, all UK charts on PC and Windows Mobile for £40.

I have Memory Map already for walking and South Coast/Channel and it's OK, however I bought Imray s/ware last year and was not very impressed, no handheld option, odd colouration, some minor programming glitches.

So, anybody got it? Any planning features/tide/current? It seems too good to be true?

Good deal IMHO

I bought this several months ago. Only used it on laptop at home (Windows 7). Works fine. Good for planning. Not yet tried using on boat with GPS. A good deal I think.
 
Bought this package a couple of months ago for the lap top. instalation very easy. Last month bought GPS system that memory map approved called evermore. Installation quite complicated for me but after much head scratching managed to get it working and its very accurate.Plotting facilities are god ,no tide information, charts very good. The only down side as far as i can see is that this is the only map they do in a marine version hopefully if it proves successful they might start producing european ones. for £40 squid you cant go wrong, can you?

I've seen posts about Open Cpn and CM93, and even bought an Ebay CD a while back which did work as s/ware and charts came together I guess.

However I've not succeeded in d/loading charts from anywhere and getting them running whether MMap OpenCpn Transas etc.

BTW- as to tides and streams, have you tried Totaltide? Everlasting s/ware.

I have found Memory Map to be excellent, works well with GPS and waypoints routes etc. It is relatively easy sending waypoints to the GPS.
I bought the downloadable marine version, you do not get a disc so all maps have to be downloaded which is ok but would have preferred a disc.
If you buy the OS maps as well you can then get good local info at anchorages etc
I have it installed on my laptop that sits on the chart table and can be viewed by the helmsman.
I also like the way the tracks are stored for future reference as a log.
Best value for money I have tried, download the trial version first.

I bought it and have it running on my windows mobile, for £40 i think its great, only things to bear in mind is that you need to be online to download the charts/areas you need in advance.

Maptech Marine's Offshore Navigator is available with a full set of UK charts from this page on the Memory Map website for £95.

I can't find any reference to AIS in the help but it does say you can interface to an autopilot so as to steer a route input into the software, which is useful.

This software also has charts available for the Med and some other areas. It also works with the free NOAA Raster Navigational Charts which are available in BSB format from the link at this page.. Full coverage of the USA coastline + the Great Lakes and completely f.o.c. Amazingly amazing. I don't know if the other packages mentioned here will work with the NOAA BSB files but I assume so ?

I spoke to the Memory Map people at Southampton. The current version gives you two licences, for Windows and iPhone, but there is an Android version in preparation so I'm waiting for that to come out. They gave me a discount code to get the £30 boat show price when it does. I suspect there will be another £30 deal at the London show.

I have it and used for a reasonably long trip.

Advantages.

SWMBO took to it instantly.

Loaded into the PC and once it is registered the CD can be removed and is no longer required. Unlike the RYA one.

There is a vast number of charts including detailed harbour ones and they are now available anywhere even without an internet signal.

We found it good for passage planing a course and waypoints can be added to the charts.

It plots your track as you go and there is an arrow showing the direction the boat is actually heading. This is very good for entering and leaving strange harbours especially when using the detailed harbour charts.

Using the laptop I have charts that I can actually see.

It comes with a license.

As it records the tracks on the PC it is great to be able to look back at where you have been when back at home.

When a track is added to one chart it is automatically added to all the charts covering that position.

The charts look like normal paper charts and you can print them off.

Disadvantages.

No tides

I found it difficult to find the next chart is needed when you sail off the edge of a chart.
I found it necessary to make a list of all the charts I was liable to require each morning.
I can now manage with a catalogue of charts which give me the number and area covered of each individual chart.

Setting up the GPS dongle took a little time and finding which com port to use if the usb plug comes out is a bit of a pain.

Usual power and water resistance problems of using a laptop in marine conditions (not really a memory map problem) ie difficult to find a place where it can be seen from the helm.

Summary.

I like it and will soon looking to see how practical it would be to set up a 10" netbook specifically for use on the boat. (not done anything about it yet but my 14" widescreen laptop is too space gready on the boat)

I bought the DVD (Note: it's not a CD) and installed the software and all the charts onto a Samsung notebook. The Samsung doesn't have a DVD so did it over the home WiFi without too much difficulty.
I used both Memory-Map and SeaClear extensively last summer while cruising the Western Isles.
Memory-Map is great value (800+ UKHO charts!) if you can live with the limited functionality of the software.

As did others, some who've commented above, I bought the disk package for £30 at the last SBS. It has 3 licenses, and I've installed the product both on the home PC and on a little netbook which I can carry conveniently in my sailing bag.

The third license is for a iPhone app thingy, and I'm not all that likely to bother with that.

I consider it superb value for money, and it has already returned the outlay in convenience and interest. Others may well choose more complex and costly alternatives....

belfield uses same charts but can have tides added and ais functionality its been going a while but I have seen no comments yet although i think there was a review of it while back in pbo

They told me at Southampton there is a new version coming at LBS, with updated charts and AIS support. Worth waiting for I would say.

I've just emailed them about the Android version. It is on the way, but no ETA yet, and they advise me to wait until it's out before buying ... ie they don't know yet if the mobile licence with the current versions will cover Android instead of iOS.
