Memory Map £40 UK Charts- any users?

My biggest complaint is that it is very difficult to improve and modify a route by dragging the waypoint to a new position. So I use Garmins Mapsource for editing and save as GPS file exchange and open in Memory Map.

What do you find is the problem? It's just a case of click, hold and drag on a PC or tap, hold and drag on a PDA. I can't really think of how it could be any easier. Are you setting the waypoint and/or route to 'locked' as a default?

Yes, not the best website, my advice would be to buy the DVD marine package as the download version takes a long time and which you do chart by chart from the program.

I am afraid this wont work as the notebook I want to put them on does not have a CD/DVD drive.

No problem dragging it but if the waypoint is part of a route then the original waypoint stays put and another is made and 2 routes then show, the original and the modified.

Folks,

Do you think there is a need for an online waypoint planning tool where you could share routes as GPXs?

A bit like using Mapsource, but marine oriented?

I think that's a great idea!

It could save people a lot of time, and also provide guidance for first timers doing a new route.

Some routes are quite difficult and you end up doubting yourself and thinking "I wonder what everyone else does, which route do they go?". This would solve all that in one.

As a safety back-up, and to discourage scurrilous types from posting dangerous ones on there, you could have reviews of each route, so people could read what others thought of them before downloading or copying.

You would of course need the usual disclaimers on there, each skipper still the master of his own vessel and responsible for the route taken etc.

The possibilities are endless..:)

Hmmm. If I work entirely within MM, there is no way I can make that happen. Even if two routes share the same waypoint, drag the waypoint and both routes move. Suspect you may have imported routes/waypoints which may well set up two separate waypoints at the same position. If you double click on the waypoint it will tell you how many waypoints/routes there are at that position. Can't suggest anything else.

One point about the maps is that as soon as updated versions are available from UKHO they are uploaded onto the MM site and are available for download. However there is no list to say which have been updated so that we can replace the existing older ones.Presumably they would like us to keep buying the DVD package!

The weekly version of Notices to Mariners lists new chart editions near the top of the document. Relevant part for UK waters is on pages 4 & 5 of this example: http://www.ukho.gov.uk/ProductsandServices/MartimeSafety/WeeklyNms/51snii10_Week51_2010.pdf
