Thanks, thats really nice. Went there in the 70's on a hired wooden yacht., one of the "lady" series from St Olaves.
No electricity, good beer, ate sausages... candlelit, very atmospheric

Its had a rough time recently. Went through a wonderful period 15 years ago as part of the Lowestoft based Green Jack brewery (finest ale there is in E anglia) but then fell into the clutches of a much less acceptable brewer and became a hippie hangout for some years which was unpleasant. Three or four years ago it was bought by furriners who stripped out all the lovely old knick-knacks, eel spears, stuffed 40lb pike in a case and all the other atmospheric stuff and painted it stark white like a poncey Oxfordshire wine-bar with prices to match. Utter inexcusable vandalism as it totally destroyed the cosy old-world ambiance. Fortunately they failed to mulct that sort of money out of the clientelle around here and it was sold last year in a community funded buyout. The managers now are local, underestand the local market (we hope) and recognise the importance of such a beautiful, historic pub.
Nonetheless it faces huge challenges, access is limited in winter due to flooded marshes, the holiday season is short and weekday trade almost non-existent for 8 months of the year, electricity is by costly generator as the nearest mains is ¾ mile away across sodden marshes and dealing with sewage with the ground-water level often a foot or so below the surface , sometimes higher is a massive problem. Still, there's hope again but rebuilding a reliable clientelle will take some doing.
Many fingers are crossed!
