meeting the regulations - grey waste

I was officially reprimanded yesterday at a French Mediterranean anchorage by uniformed coast guard types for not being fitted with "evacuation tanks" for shower and galley waste. I passed, apparently, the similar regulation for sewage with my simple, GBP70 Portapotti. I have a 28 foot sailing yacht and have neither the space, nor budget, for expensive, complex solutions.

The accent seems to be "fitted with", whether or not the thing actually works well or not, or even if it is used.

Any ideas for a DIY system for the grey waste ( I'll need two) perhaps along the lines of a dual tap gubbins fed into a five or ten litre container? Where do I find the taps/valves etc?

My French neighbours simply advised me to ignore the whole thing - which is the easiest and cheapest solution of all!

I'm probably wrong here but I didn't know that there were any regulations in the EU regarding the fitting of grey or black waste tanks??? or am I wrong, as usual!!

However, there are various "local" regulations regarding the actual dumping of the grey or black waste into the marina/sea.

Alan.

I'm with Alan, I didn't realise there were any 'grey water' regulations; or at least not one's being enforced, until you got to Turkey and even those relating to 'black water' seem to be generally ignored; notwithstanding which, we've found space in our 27 footer for and use, a holding tank on our marine toilet. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I carry a Portapoti (brand new & unused) for such encounters my old Snowgoose having space for such luxuries-it could be useful in the unlikely event of the Lavac blocking. It would be interesting to know if there are any regs. re sinks.

You don't have to be fitted with any form of waste storage. However, you're not allowed to discharge waste within 3 - 6nm of the shore . . . so you'd need a big cork otherwise. Most people store black waste in holding tanks, and discharge grey waste only discreetly. Any other behaviour risks a fine if you're shopped or caught. Incidentally, beware diesel spillages while re-fuelling . . .

Might be worth writing to your Euro-MP for advice about the regulations. Give him something to do!

I wouldn't do that if I were you. If there aren't any Regs now there soon would be /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
