Hello everyone.

Going through my first aid kit and manual before setting off with the family for ten months.

I'd love any recommendations for a first aid manual.

Also, any additions to the following:

The SCMG is available as a free download. For quick reference, the RYA 1st Aid book above is fine.

This is the 'serious' medical kit we carried for our 2 year Atlantic circuit. The two of us had done the STCW 95 medical courses up to and including Medical Care Aboard Ship., usually taken by Masters and First Mates. We never used any of it. Nor did we ever advertise its presence to anyone.

However, I suggest that if you need to refer to a book in an emergency, valuable time mau be lost !

Yes, thanks. Just did the Medical First Aid 4-days at Warsash.

...which was good, but in hindsight I'd advised doing the course at a sailing establishment. Too much focus on defibrillators and stretchers and ships with a pre-existing well-stocked first aid kit. Not enough on life on a yacht!

Benefit of a book is (1) a quick reference guide for the rest of the crew (2) a deeper reference for when I've forgotten stuff

In my sea bag I have a copy of Skipper's Emergency Handbook. Its far smaller than the SCMG and designed for the yachtsman. It also proved the foundation for the new SCMG and where the illustrations come from (hence copyright issues).

It is on an official government site as a downloadable pdf. Downloading for personal use should be OK, but not commercial reproduction.

The link does not point to a downloadable pdf copy of the 23rd edition SCMG. It points to a 3-page pdf with a section on where to buy a copy.

3. How to obtain copies

3.1. The Ship Captain’s Medical Guide 23rd Edition (ISBN number 9780115534614) is published by TSO on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Copies may be obtained from TSO, the MCA’s official publisher, via their website. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)

3.2. An e-book is in preparation and is expected to be available for purchase in October 2019. 3.3. Due to intellectual property included in the 23rd edition. the SCMG will no longer be freely available from www.gov.uk .The content may not be reproduced without the permission of TSO.
 
To expand on what we chose and why.
Our basis was the MCA Category A suitably scaled down as the standard minimum is 10 crew.
Some items were included in case someone else might have an emergency ie the epipen and GTN.
We decided that would need to keep someone alive for 4 days. After that we reckoned that assistance would be at hand from either ships or shore based.
We didn't take a body bag or a Neil Robertson stretcher.
All the supplies were purchased from LE West in Barking.
We did have another first aid kit for everyday stuff, plasters, painkillers etc.

There you go, I have Barretts hence the Omeprazole. If you have long term drugs that any of the family take, you need to ensure you have enough with you

Kurafid (terrible in-joke name) is the first-aid manual for British Antarctic Survey, and is VERY comprehensive, and also written in a reasonably friendly format. It's intended as a field guide to be used in high-pressure situations. It is available via people like AbeBooks, but it does assume access to drugs that it might be unwise to carry on a yacht (e.g. morphine)
