Med Mooring. Again !!

Yes there are relatively cheap marinas like Denia dotted all along the Costa Blanca but if you're going to spend most of that saved money cruising to the Balearics several times a year, you might as well be in the Balearics permanently which is the conclusion we came to. Yes the marinas are more expensive but the Balearics as a cruising area is probably the best in the W Med IMHO and flying to/from Palma is so easy

I think this is exactly the balance we are deliberating over and trying to get right. Thanks for sharing your own experiences. As Jrudge has pointed out, you have to start somewhere, so Im looking forward to making some decisions in the next couple of weeks...

Hi Rick,

That sounds a great few days, I would be great full of your findings once you have been to them all, I think cala d'or and scm were my 2 favourites.

Sorry I've only just caught up with this thread.
I'm in the middle of helping Whitelighter with his delivery to Sant Carles.

Interestkng that you compare SCM with Cala D'or
IMHO they are very different places.
Fir example
One on the mainland - one on an island.
One a busy holiday resort - one a sleepy Spanish town.
One very cheap - one very expensive
Etc

I woul have thought that you eould like one and dislike the other for the very same reasons.
Normally, one would say compare horses with horses or apples with apples.
IMO these are entirely different places.

Thanks for your thoughts Mike. I can see why it might look a little strange or perhaps even like 'muddled thinking', but as Med beginners, considering options over an admittedly wide spectrum is sort of the point for us. We have few constraints, which of course widens the options. For instance, we aren't overly bothered about airport distances as we plan to stay at least a couple of weeks at a time. No need to rush back to the UK after the weekend. Price isn't the main factor either. A more expensive option will feel like good value if it gives us all that we want with less compromises. To get a first-hand feel for the differences between a busy holiday resort and a sleepy Spanish town is all part of my mission next week! SWMBO and I can see benefits in both. It would make things easier if we were firmly of one persuasion or the other!
For our first season at least, we have narrowed the field a little as Im not currently looking at the Cote d'Azur despite loving this part of the world. I may be wrong, but it seemed like finding an annual rental was harder work and we may revisit this option if in future we buy a lease.
Good luck with the delivery trip. I hope to see you soon.
Rick

If cost and travel time are not major factors then Majorca would be my choice, lots of places and bays to visit, pop over to Ibiza, Cabrera, Menorca or even over to SCM. I have stayed briefly in Alicante which was OK, also Moraira not far from Denia.

But for excellent facilities/services, good bunch of helpful Dockmasters and Berth holders, great value and a safe lagoon on your bathing platform not to mention both Reus and Castellon airports within an hour SCM is very hard to beat and an excellent first step into the Med. Not as exciting as Majorca but a nice safe place to berth.
