Med Marina Suggestions/Costs

Re speeding in Spain, I got caught (rightly!) by one of their cameras in April this year, letter came by post to my UK address, 100 euro fine but no points. Easy system to pay online

Re marinas, I did so a search this last year. Javea and Moraira were both full (asked if there had been vacancies what the cost would be and it was expensive, 10,000 euros plus for my boat) if you wanted an annual mooring. In Denia the Real Club Nautico de Denia were doing a deal of a 50% discount for the first year, which did make it very reasonable (can't remember the exact figure) but then went back to normal after that. I suspect that deal would have not lasted very long as it made it significantly cheaper than the other two marinas
Altea was a couple of thousand euros cheaper than the normal Denia prices, but bearing in mind my boat is a 10m sailing yacht
Plenty of anchorages between Javea and Moraira but they tend to suffer from the usual med swell in the afternoons/evenings which is common along that coast

There is no problem getting into Altea, its not complete full but close to it.
Meridan Altea was more expensive and a bit cut off as you need a car to go anywhere, whilst Altea has everything within a short walk.

On a good day portals is 15 mins from the airport, probably more like 20-25 mins on average though.

Regarding full english breakfast, either walk into portals nous (5mins) or take your boat over to palma nova and take the tender to one of many many full english type establishments.

What is Portals like in the winter? Is it dead like Cala D'Or?

When we were moored in Club de Mar in Palma, we used to regularly visit a friend who moored his boat in Portals. I wouldnt say that Portals is buzzing during the winter but plenty of the bars and restaurants seemed to stay open. Portals is also a bit of a destination for ex pats living permanently on the island and locals so its not just boaters who use the place. Also its only about 15mins taxi ride from Palma old town. Portals is definitely more lively than Cala d'Or in winter

Do bear in mind the cost of Portals is daft.

Their high season used to be July and August.

The other day I was quoted ( they were full ) e350 plus Iva plus water plus electric for an 18m boat in June.

So all up close to e450 a night.

Bear in mind there is no security on the pontoons, gawpers walking past your boat and no pool / club. I do like it but it has many down sides. Not least the price

J, the thing about Portals is that it is massively more expensive in the summer that the winter. For your boat, it's €125 plus VAT per day in the winter and this jumps to a massive €343 plus VAT in the summer. So you could argue that it's a bit of a bargain in winter (pricelist: http://www.puertoportals.com/en/amarres.html).

For me (10m), I pay €300 (inc VAT) per month (all year) for SCM. Compare this to €375 (plus VAT) for a Portals winter berth which is almost a no-brainer apart from the fact that I'd need to find somewhere else from 1/6 onwards to avoid the high summer Portals costs.

The difference is even smaller for me to winter in Altea (I reckon that wintering in Altea will cost me en extra £80 for the whole six months). Not even the cost of a decent lunch!

E125 is no deal. Palma, Andraxt etc in winter are E60 for my size boat so it is expensive most ways you look at it.

The monthly rate is £1950 for me plus IVA. Andraxt, Cala Dor etc £1450 inc IVA give or take.

It is a lively place and has more things to do than most, but of personal preference I dont like tourists wandering at the back of my boat taking photos of me having breakfast ( at 11am!) and for that money they should give you a swimming pool!

That kind of thing has always made us laugh. It seems that if you are parked on a public quay, that gives passers by carte blanche to peer into your boat, take photos and pass comments on it within your earshot. Would they come upto your house and do the same? Probably yes I guess;)

I suppose the answer would be to have a discussion on board about how horrid it was for the tourists to be looking at you. I suspect they would then chirp up you were being a twat or whatever ! You try it first !

I was thinking that if I just pad around a bit in my underpants that should put most of them off!

LOL, right now I'm rather put off by an Austrian sailor who enjoys padding around without anything at all... :ambivalence:
Good thing that he's fairly distant! :D

Yeah the bloody Germans (Austria is Germany insofar as we Brits are concerned) love displaying themselves on holiday irrespective of whether they've got anything to display

Reminds me of a funny instance when we anchored in Menorca many years ago. We were behind a German flagged Sealine which seemed to be occupied by a couple. After a while, the woman came to the back of the boat, looked very furtively around and took all her clothes off in the cockpit before diving into the water stark naked. Actually in this case, she did have plenty to display so she caught my attention and she caught the attention of several other guys in the bay because very soon her boat was surrounded by about 6 pedalos with males in them, all waiting for her to get out of the water. When eventually she did get out of the water, there was an enormous cheer from the men in the pedalos and from blokes on several boats anchored in the bay. To her credit, she took it in good part and bowed to the onlookers. I dont know where her husband was during all this but he was a lucky man;)

Playing devil’s advocate, a fair number of the owners of the larger boats in Portals own properties out there or drive down from Europe to use their boats, so being able to park right behind their boat is quite advantageous for convenience. Granted it has security consequences, but there are constant security patrols.

There’s also the debate of extrovert vs introvert. To me it certainly grates at times not being able to sit on the boat without having people ogling at you, but other people possibly quite like the attention. It’s my in-laws’ boat and they had an episode a few years ago when some people wandering about having a nosey seemed quite taken aback the answer was no to them coming on board for a look around, after all, the boats registered in Glasgow and they come from Glasgow :encouragement:

looked very furtively around
LOL, considering the outcome, feel free to call me cynic if you wish, but I suspect that rather than "furtively" (which I suppose you meant as "hoping to not get noticed") she was actually checking that there was a potential audience in sight, to enjoy her performance... :encouragement:

Quite a number of Oz cruisers have custom shade cloth type awnings made up for the rear of the cockpit area, mainly for extreme sun protection while at anchor, but also doubles as privacy screens while in the marinas.

Well I certainly enjoyed her performance. Luckily I was on the f/b and the SWMBO downstairs;)

OK
So what would you do if a courting couple in a kayak are going at it whilst attached to your anchor trip buoy.
This happened to us about three weeks ago.
SWMBO asked what she should do.
I thought of putting the drone up but I was told to leave them alone.
Anything bigger than a kayak would have been a concern - that was the anchorage where we were tied back in San Miguel.
The whole anchor rig was under tension - and that wan't the only thing under tension. :D:D
