As one who is planning to base a boat in the Med from next year but still live in the UK, (years delay due to Covid), what are peoples thoughts / plans regarding the potential (likely) imposition of being only able to spend 90 days in 180 at the boat.
I am guessing some may not be affected but there must be those who are used to spending 4 or 5 months there each summer?
I am aware that those with houses in europe can apply for some form of residency to get round this, but would this work on a boat?

Have a look on liverbourd forum plenty of info , but most are raggies .

Wait a bit and you should be able to buy a boat in the Med VAT free. Then leave it somewhere in Europe on Temporary Admission (18 months, with a 1 day leave/return to restart the clock)

90/180 will simply mean splitting your time between Schengen and non-Schengen/non-EU countries.

Have a look at noonsite or other non-EU cruising and boating forums to get an idea how they cope at the moment because that's the best guess for Brits come 2021.

... and Berthon have a reasonable write-up on the problem from a VAT perspective.

There are loads of threads on this topic - try a forum search for "Schengen" to find them.

Well said Baggieeeeeeee

What concerns me is not being able to take a car load of gear for the boat. I'm talking about new stuff, engine spares, electronics etc. Even if there are no tariffs there will be the VAT issue on everything I take plus the hassle of as yet unknown paperwork.

I'm getting used to the 90/180 part, may be able to get a French long stay visa each year which would fix that. Don't think residency would work for me, too many complications. France hasn't put the application web site online yet either, due October, when we will see what they propose.

“ NEW” Gear ? .....drop the new bit .
As long as it’s now new it can move hassle free .

Use your imagination to make it appear not new in your car assuming you are searched .

Thanks for the replies.
I forget there are other forums on YBW, and yes they are full of thoughts on this, but mostly written from long term multi country point of view.
We just want a boat in France that we can use relatively locally for weeks at a time during the Summer.
We are just trying to work out if it is worth proceeding with the restriction, or wether our use will fall within the 90/180 rule anyway (if that indeed is what happens).
'Simply splitting your time between Schengen and non-Schengen/non-EU countries' is not really an option for our intended use.
The long term visa for France does appear to be a solution but don't know if it is multiple entry or not at the moment.
Hadn't thought about taking stuff out there (VAT) but good point to.
I am thinking that maybe for most on hear who are uk based with Med boats, and who still work, the 90 / 180 would not be an issue.

The 90/180 is as certain as it's possible to be in my opinion. I really don't believe there will be any adjustment to the actual Schengen rules due to the implications for the 'rest of the world' countries.

I'm hoping France will eventually do a side deal allowing 180/365 which they are allowed to do. My guess is others will also do this.

It will be interesting to see how much the annual health insurance increases if there is no EHIC. Mine renews in November so not long to wait.

My plans for next year are based on the 90/180 limitation & as i said I will have the majority of "stuff" on board for the next three years. That includes 3,000 teabags as I don't drink coffee ?

There seem to be 2 ways to deal with this.

-Each country can issue a long stay visa ( for its own country - not Schengen)
- in the case of Spain ( I am looking at doing it now) if you buy a property worth more than E500,000 as an non EU resident they will grant you a golden visa for you and family. This gives you the right but not the obligation to reside. This is important as you don't want to get mixed up in Spanish tax ( rates are higher and they have a wealth tax which for boat owners will hit many). that visa also claims to give you free Schengen access.

Someone might do a deal but no one knows and no country will break free of the EU negotiations. If they fail then I imagine there will be some country specific deals available as many brits have properties abroad and they will want to keep them coming and selling then more houses!

I joke, but actually, I have been googling this over the last week or so - prior to reading this thread.
I wonder if some of this will disappear.
For example, according to this page, we currently have to adhere to the 90/180 day rule now.
Applying for a Schengen Visa in the UK - Requirements & Guidelines
Run the Schengen visa eligibility checker on that page and you will see what I mean.
How many people know this and what authority has been policing this restriction?
I wonder if all this concern about visas will just not be policed.
