MDL like customers to use a metered shorepower lead at £150 a throw. Can these be purchased elsewhere for less and will MDL let you use such an item?

i have acquired 2 from other ex-mdl berthholders, mdl insist on checking them before allowing you to connect but are otherwise happy. i still have one in good nick if you're interested.

A couple of years ago I found the company that make them for MDL. They would not supply direct as, according to them, they made them exclusively for MDL.

In my marina the meter is part of the service unit providing electricity and water. I'm not asked to pay anything extra in terms of service delivery and my leccy consumption over the winter was charged for at a very resonable price - 5p a unit as I recall. I recently moved berths and onto one with the 16amp socket; I didn't have an adaptor down to the usual outlet - the marina provided the adaptor lead free!!!

£150 seems I nice little earner for MDL - in my opinion they should give you the meter lead and charge a modest deposit, returnable when you hand it in. LOL

I agree entirely. A normal shorepower lead is about £25. I can't believe the meter is an extra ton. Nice earner indeed!

Their choices were when i was a customer:-

1. Rent a lead at £75 a year

2. Buy one at £150.

I chose to buy and now I'm no longer a customer, I have one going too.

As Tom Jones sang :

Its not unusual .......

Hayling want 110 ....

May sound stupid ...... but don't EVER use it somewhere else other than YOUR berth in YOUR marina ..... I know someone who connected theirs in a strange marina and then later back at base they were charged again cause the meter showed useage !!!!!

What happens to a visitor to MDL, say staying just one night, that requires shorepower? Do they have to buy a meter?

The learning curve starts at £30,000 and works it's way upwards exponentially

Don't remember exactly but I think they pay a flat rate circa £2.

There was a post on this sometime recently with a link to a firm that sold them. If you can't get one of a forumite PM me and I'll try and find it for you. Anything to do MDL out of getting the benefit.

the answer is yes - I priced them over a year ago when my local marina offered an electrical supply - they were £60 inc vat. I opted for a slimline domestic meter mounted in a waterproof housing which cost £30.
I will attempt to source the supplier and will post again.

Andy,

I read your post with interest and all the various responses …..

This topic seems to raise its head each and every year so I will endeavour to set the record straight once again.

Firstly, the leads that MDL purchase from Microcustom are not made exclusively for us but are in fact widely available through various outlets. To the best of my knowledge there are at least three different companies making similar leads all for about the same price.

When comparing price it should be borne in mind that the leads we sell include 15 metres of cable together with all the required plugs and sockets etc.

As for profit margin and your comment about them being a ‘nice little earner’ we in fact make very little money from their sale as we are keen that our berth holders use these leads to aid us with our electricity billing.

We do have a limited number of second-hand leads available for approximately £100 so please let me know should you require one.

Finally, our daily visitor berthing rates include electricity where supplies are available.

Regards

Thanks for the input. I contacted Microcustom and they wanted £149 + vat. Obviously MDL wont pay this for them though. Some marinas have the meter on the shorepower service pod on the pontoon. Seems a better bet but I understand that, at QAB at anyrate, this would mean installing new equipment.
Of course much of this debate stems from the fact that campsites, marinas etc can no longer sell on electricity at a profit BUT many such establishments seem to find a way making money via the electric route! A favourite campsite I visit with my caravan charges £2 per night to "rent" the post with the socket in it!

Andy,

We tried at Ocean Village to monitor electricity usage via meters fixed at the pontoons some years ago. The main problem was that the annual berth holders did not want anyone else to use the socket for fear that they would be charged for someone else’s electricity consumption. That is when we moved to metered shore power leads, which gave our customers the confidence that they would only be charged for what they have used.

No easy answers on this topic!

Jon

'cos the meters are towards the plug end of the lead and are visible - usually tied to rail/pulpit etc. and MDL go round reading all the meters periodically...
