MDL contractors charge

I personally don't think that there is any thing wrong in this. I know the rules when I put my boat there, so can't really bleat after the event.

I know of resturants that get really pissy if I take my own food and wine! ripp off or what tut!

Eddie

ps The contractors that leave their mess behind, dump stuff in the skips on site without any regard for the marinas legal responsibility for correct waste disposal, park their vans in customers spaces, leave mess all over the floor and wash their brushes out in the shower room hand basins, are rude and abusive to the other boat owners (equally paying thousands of pounds for the ability to leave their boats safely) who happen to complain about the mess and noise....Probably can't see what all the fuss is a about!

Eddie, is that how you see ouside contractors( me being one).

Wait till you need one to repair your boat, the rubbish they leave will no doubt be related to your job, you pay to dump your rubbish in with your mooring fee.

Park there van in a car park, so you would rather he park miles away and charge you for walking back and forth to his van (think about it).

When are they rude to you, I have been on the thick end of marina staff being rude to me before, but kept my mouth shut as im there to make a living even when ive paid my dues to them.

As for SQ its a very industrial marina, lots of charter boats, new boat drop off point for boats being shipped abroad, ive seen it all there, even boats being welded and sanded down next to berth holders boats leaving mess all over the place, and yet after complaining to be told "its a working boatyard" see I was once a berth holder there too.

If charges were added to your bill im sure you would see it in a different light, after all were already paying enough to keep our boats in a marina, maintainance is part of owning a boat, the marinas know that, so charging someone to get on it to carry out what needs doing.............. well ive said my bit.

Port Solent used to charge a contractors fee but after alot of objections from berth holders and contractors this was dropped. None of the Premier marinas charge now as I do work in all of them and the staff seem friendly and helpfull, as they should be, As mentioned earlier, the £6 per day is not alot to pay but its the principle and if you are working on a boat for a week or more, as I am on this one, it's another £30 on the bill!

The highest I have paid on the Thames was £50 per day, yes, you read it right £50 5-0h!

When I asked them to justify the cost, the reply was "Because the customer is not using our marina service centre".

It is clear to me that some marinas will charge a high amount for external contractors fees with the sole purpose of protecting the interests of the residential service providers that pay rent within the marina.

The same applies to insurance, as others on here will know, insurance for our various trades is not cheap. Meeting the "required" insurance needs of some marinas has forced me to change our policy from £2 million, to £5 million then to £10 million, why? simply to make it as hard as possible to get in, forcing the customer to use the only service available...the one that is bolted on the side of the marina.

I am all for the registration process, checking if you have ample and correct insurance and paying a fee to cover any administration, handing out security passes or keys for access and so on, but greed is one thing and forcing your customers choice of service provider is just playing dirty.

I can understand the other side of the coin, if a business was paying a marina rent I would expect them to assist them in obtaining work from within the marina, after all they will be paying rent day in and day out regardless of the work coming in, and can understand them being a bit peeved if someone with less overheads was able to stroll in and pay a few quid.

It's not an easy one to please all parties.
But some marinas do seem to forget who the biggest customer is... the berth holder.

Well said Volvo Paul and Tamarind. You are very welcome in MDL Chatham as I don't think they charge - or do they? - they never used to! oh well I think I'll go back to sleep.:)

Ironically at Brighton it's become quite hard to get short-term parking on the ramp up to the west jetty because of selfish parking by the on-site tenants - not visiting contractors. Parking there is supposed to be limited to 25 mins, but you frequently see the same vans parked there all day long.

Cheers

Hope its not too bad as will need to park there on wednesday for a few hours, for the amount of berths there I find the parking pretty poor for visiting, is it that bad being a berth holder?

There's plenty of parking in the multi-storey in the week, although it does fill up at the weekends. If you're parking for a few hours mid-week then you want to be in the multi-storey unless you're in a van which is too tall, in which case a 'v' space is where you want to be. If you're on the ramp for too long you'll get clamped - unless you get a dispensation from the marina, like being a tenant for example.

Cheers

Thanks, will be in a van and that def. wont go in the multi story so will talk to marina staff nicely and see what I can sort

I was at Brighton on wednesday this week working on one of my regular yachts. The ramp can be a real pain, last year one of the restaurants was being re-fitted and all the builders, plumbers etc. parked on it all day making a visiting marine valeter or any other marine related contractors task of parking, reporting to the marina office to collect keys, parking permit for the multistorey, electronic gate key and a trolley for your equipment a major problem. I arrived at 7:00 am parked on the ramp and was standing at the gate waiting to be let in ( the intercom to the marina office is broken and half hanging of the post ) when a premier marina member of staff informed me that the office was locked and the only person with the keys was serving 3 yachts at the fuel dock. I had to sit in my van for an hour and a half before I could report to the office. I am completely amazed that only one person at this time in the morning has access to the office in what is one of the largest marinas in europe. Going back to the original thread, Premier don't charge contractors, MDL do unless your are working for an on site commercial tenant. The other strange thing is that Premier take a copy of your liability insurance for their records, MDL don't and are not even allowed to view it for legal reasons.

Working in Trafalgar Wharf today, no charge there, just pop your head in the office and say hello. Nice people, relaxed approach, isn't that what it should be like?

When the owner signs the contract he/she agrees to abide by the terms and conditions of the marina. If she is not happy with it ...........move the boat elsewhere.Which probably means her contractors will be standing in a muddy boat yard with dodgy single 240v socket and a leaky tap in a far distant corner to aid their work.Email me for details :)
Your choice !

You have pretty much explained Shamrock Quay then! :p
