I am trying to obtain a replacement exhaust manifold for my ancient md21b volvo engine. is there anyone out there who knows of a possible source !! I can then continue my summer cruise.

Bowman do a a combined heat exchanger & manifold, about £850.00 though, and if you need a new exhaust elbow a VP one will cost another £280 on top.

Try Lancing Marine, remember your base engine is a Peugeot 2.5 ltr XDP 90, so if you can find a marinising kit for it you'll save loads. In fact your service cost will tumble if you buy standard Peugeot bits for it. I'm devolvoing mine as I go.

All the best

Thanks for that Ariadne. I have been aware of the Bowman manifold, but it is not practical to hang all the brackets for the alternator, water maker and freshwater heat exchanger.
I have now commissioned locally a fabricated stainless steel manifold with cooling jacket dimensioned to suit all the existing pipes and brackets. Lets hope it works.

I'd be very interested in seeing that bit of commissioned kit, any chance of drawing of it and some pics when its all fitted?

I've split my heat exchanger of the engine and mounted it about a metre away - sort of works well and the engine stays nice and cool, but its not quite right.

Will Photograph when complete . Don't hold your breath it is promised in a Portuguese week!

ooo, very pretty! How did the cost compare to the Bowman?

Would have thought a custom s/s manifold like that would be £££

The original quote was for approx 1,000 euro. Although the design has changed to accommodate several unique features on the oem manifold. I suspect there will be some final negotiation on completion !!!

Congratulation, it´s a great quote.

I have a 15 years old MD 22A in my boat, a VP replacement for the heatexchanger is incl. VAT € 4.797,09 (861581), on top of that comes the inset with 2.063,61 incl. VAT, plus freight, so it will be more than € 7.100 !!!

I contacted Beta-Marine for a complete Beta 50 incl. instruments but without gearbox, incl. freight to the Canaries. The spanish Beta dealer´s price is € 6.800 taxfree Las Palmas, incl. gearbox ZF 25 it would cost me € 8.400My heatexchanger works still fine, but I know what to do when bigger replacements will become necessary.

Why do people still order VolvoPenta, Perkins made in Japan engines ?

I'd appreciate it if you send me any drawing and spec's on this bit of kit.
The Bowman combined manifold/heat exchanger was about £900.00 plus delivery & import duty etc! So it could be quite a saving if we could get one made locally. What plumbing mod's have you had to make?

Dave

Hi Dave
The installation is still to be completed, extra support is required to take the weight of the front engine assembly which carries the 2nd alternator the watermaker compressor the fridge compressor and the fresh water heat exchanger. The design was not drawn it evolved from a few sketches and the need to replace the existing castings functions. The head dictated the inlet/exhaust design and the inner exhaust tube 2mm thick needed to line up with existing outlet casting. The outer tube 2mm thick forms the exhaust cooling jacket with inlet tube near the existing pipe. The outlet lines up with cooled outlet casting. The inlet manifold was made separately and struts added to consolidate the assembly . Brackets were added for the engine alternator and end plates added to original castings dimensions. Will post again with progress!!

Installation complete and working !! Just completed passage which included 7 hours motor sailing due to lack of wind. For those in Portugal the engineer that oversaw the assembly at a local engineering company in Lagos was Ralf Putzer Tel 00351 962396354 He was certainly a great help in a desperate situation.

Not fix to the engine, but have a spare head. live in Somerset uk.
bought a complete spare engine minus block when water pump failed.
but have now got two spare.

Still not a bad old engine

If it's the water heat exchanger then we used an oil cooler instead of the original. We re-routed the pipe-work away from the engine (plenty of room at the front now!) and bolted the oil cooler/heat exchanger to a panel about a metre away with new pipe-work. Works a treat with a better flow of water and it all runs a bit cooler (great in the Carrib') - downside is the extra piping and the making new fittings.

Bowman make a combined heat exchanger/manifold for this engine (Peugeot XDP 4.90) part No. PG210-3754; Lancing Marine sell this for about £800.00 plus shipping. You may need to get a new exhaust elbow made to marry it all together though. This is the route I'll take when I need to replace my existing set up. Seems its cheaper than VP parts if you can get them.

If you have the room then its worth re-mounting the fuel filter system away from the engine as well. I replaced my VP mechanical lift pump with a 12V one and haven't looked back. They were only £25 each and a pump rebuild kit was over £100!

I think we need a MD21B owners section on here!!
