I do not know whether buying a stainless elbow reduces the deposition but here it is possible to have a stainless one made up more cheaply than buying an original.

Went to Keyparts today to get a spare as they were close to my travels today. They were out of stock!!! due to the spring rush, as they said. This must be a very common problem. After a bit of cleaning the inner sleeve on mine looks to be quite badly corroded, not sure how usable.

I'm not sure but assume it directs the water toward the outlet rather than back into the heat exchanger, it might also spray or mix the water into the exhaust. The only way to find out would be to take one off, connect the water inlet to a hose and look at what happens - maybe someone with a new one (about to be installed could check this).

I'd be interested in how a stainless replacement might work (ie better or worse - does it enjoy the same calcium build - but it ought not corrode? and should be easier to acid wash). At Stg170 every 1,000 hours it might be a good investment.
