On some pumps, a thin fibre washer placed into the seal housing before fitting the seal will displace the seal longitudinally on the shaft sufficiently that the lip will run on a virgin section of the shaft and not leak.

It's a bit of a bodge, but can delay a major pump rebuild by a season or three.

Compared to the VP price of anew pump cover and gasket, speedseal seems to be not overly expensive.

I seem to recall my replacement VP cover cost £20 odd for an MD2030. Much more and I've have refaced the old one. The gasket a couple of quid, which seemed poor value for a scrap of paper, but I was feeling lazy. Isn't the Speedseal over £100?

Peter, do you recall the site you got them from? mine aren't metric thread.

Replaced all mine with Allen head screws,£1 on ebay for 10 in A2 ,dont need 316 or A4.
In the past have used gaskets cut from old charts but latest one is made from fine wet and dry paper as its waterproof.

Yes there are 2 seals, but the other one stops oil coming any further forward along the shaft from the engine and is probably OK. You generally only need to replace the front one that is in the impeller chamber. As others have said, new ones are readily available from the ever-helpful Keypart people, and can be replaced in situ.
Re-facing the cover is easy, using say 600 then 1000 grade wet'n'dry on a guaranteed flat surface like a chunk of kitchen worktop (preferably not one in the kitchen...).

My engine is a Perkins Perama which is the same basic engine with jabsco pump and it is metric thread,I would have thought your pump is metric,you can now get A4 on ebay for £1.
