Just got a renewal request for my registration.
Another £25 of shrinking pension for what?
I've never, ever, been asked for any ships papers in all my Channel cruising.
So what do I get for my money....
Whaddya think chaps, should I take a chance for the next 5 years (I think that's about my max cruising time left). Or send 'em the lolly?
Has anyone actually benefited by sending moey to taffieland?
Oh and a very Happy New Year (belated) to you scuttlers!!

My last yacht was fully registered, my present one is SSR, I think for the extra few quid every 3 or 4 years to keep up the fully reg. does give a benefit of proven ownership etc. Yet to fully register a yacht for european cruising is a waste of a few hundred pounds.SSR has to be renewed for a few pounds I think. If you are asking should your yacht be registered at all then at some time you may be aked for it.
And similarly I have never been asked for any documents in France or Spain over the last 20 years.
 
Apologies, I have confused the issue by wittering on about Part 1 reg when Bob is clearly talking about Part 3. As you were, everyone.

Having recently completed a "round trip" to the Med and back, we found our Part 1 papers eased the formalities at marinas in Spain, France and Portugal. We were asked for our papers three times, twice in France on the "outside" Atlantic route going down and twice again, in France in the canals on the return run. However, if the cruising is pretty local i.e. across the Channel once a year, then SSR is possibly the best option.

Last year I had a phone call telling me the renewed one had arrived, I was in Gorey on the way to the St Malo, as you know I didn't come back to collect it. Never been asked to produce it, but I have heard of others who have.

If you're really pushed for the £25 I reckon you could knock one up on the PC, but of course that would be terrible, illegal and I know it would never cross your mind to do such a thing.

Seriously for a moment, problem is it could spoil a holiday if you did get a particularly officious Gendarme.

Copy of my SSR presently resides with Latvian Police, pending appeal against alleged offence.
If I had not SSR or other registration document for the boat I'm informed boat would have been impounded pending proof of ownerships and possible prosecution for non-registry.

So IMHO - to quote an old Insurance sales line :

It's better to have it and not need it
Than to Not have it and need it.

Mine needs renewing in April 2009 - SSR will certainly be renewed on mine.

Don't start that again ... it's a misconception that I do not live in UK. I have an address etc. and already confirmed that SSR can be issued. Leave it out please !!
