Suncoast on inside back cover - with current weather maybe I should get Phil to bring new boat home /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That was one of the better articles this month but on the whole I think MBY has sunk to new lows. I read anything of interest within an hour. Boat tests have no value because they are generally always positive.

Yet more product tests, that don't include popular choices. For example where was the best selling Icom M1 Euro V in the handheld VHF roundup?

Where was Custom Yachting this month?

A day after having received it this month's MBY has now been relegated to the smallest room.

Got to agree, there is no spark in the mag any more. Bring back Tom (a thought probably dreaded by Tom and IPC in equal measure /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Having just returned from the 'dark side' to the 'upmarket side' (!), I have cancelled YM and PBO, and subscribed to MBY. I've just received my second copy, and not having read the magazine for a couple of years or so, must say I'm seriously disappointed.

Maybe it's looking back through rose tinted glasses, but I'm sure it used to be much more interesting. Last months copy had a large article about Superyachts. Now, I'm not in the slightest interested in seeing how the other half (or 1%) live, these boats are totally out of my league, and irrevellant surely to 99% of MBY readers.

Perhaps it's a problerm across the board, 'cos there has been much criticism recently on SB, of YM and PBO (most of which I agree with)

Maybe I should have gone for MBM, though the last time I read one of those, it seemed to concentrate on river activities/boats. I hope MBY picks up (I really Peter Cumberlidge' articles, though even they seem to be a bit thin these days.

What to do.......?

Hi Magnum.
How is Palma treating you guys.
Did yu ever get to Pto Adriano and Eutopia restaurant?
Make sre you visit the refrbished Castillo Hotel Son Vida which re-opens next Spring.
About MBY, agree, also enjoyed Phil's article. The Elan report wasn't exactly positive but what happened to the rest of the report, ended prematurely on page 48 /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Would love to see a decent article on the Ferretti Altura 690 - enjoyed the Broadstone report but a bit short imho. Miss the Custom Yachting also.

Interesting read Phil.
Have you been over to Marina Smer (page 19). Wanna do a forum report on this coast for those of us that are interested?
Yep, Phantom 50 /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Fairline Wales are bringing her up to Conwy NW. We will bring her home from there to Dublin, get her registered etc and then she is all ours.

Agree - rubbish read

Yep - me too. A huge disappointment. Read it on Thurs whilst eating lunch for heavens sake.

I noticed a least 3 refs to what will be coming in the next issue - is this accepting that this one is naff in the extreme?

Must buck up and fast!

oh dear, I ordered MBY at Southampton show after having cancelled it about 15 months ago! still yet to receive November copy! made a few phone calls but still no mag, sounds like I'm not missing much, perhaps I should cancel my order!

Barry

Re: Agree - rubbish read

MBY needs to reduce superficiality and increase content fast. Otherwise they will have to contend with the massive repercussions of my subscription cancellation.

Seriously Hugo, the glossy veneer is so thin it's embarrassing.

Something valid there I am sure, but just thank our lucky stars we are not subject to the Euro mags, most are nothing more than glorified brochures for the manufacturers and the editorial contents are just rehashed press releases.

In fairness to the UK mags they do undertake comprehensive tests, having been present during one they do test the boats the the limit and bring all their own test equipment. The euro jurnos just take copies of the manufactuers figures and re-print them.

As far as UK press just being positive about eveything, I have seen quite a few negative comments about boats something you never see in euro press.

I suggest they do have to be careful not to be too negative or 'Clarkson' in the their reports otherwise no one will supply them boats to test again. I think what some people are looking for is a Top Gear kind of report but the marine industry is a totally different ball game, small manufacturers (along with some big ones) who with one bad test could face ruin. Ford gets a bad report and so what, might account for 0.01% loss in sales, little boat manufacturer gets a bad report and looses five sales = 25% of his turnover.

In reality there are no bad boats these days with maybe a few exceptions just different takes on a similar theme. Similarly, there are no really bad cars, they all do a reasonable job of getting you from a-b, some maybe slightly better than others but again the differences can be so small it hardly makes any difference in the real world yet the press slate one and praise the other. The problem arises that GM get bad or negative comment they will survive, Small guy producing 20 boats a year gets one bad report over something small and he's kaput. It then sets a precedent to other small manufacturers to be vary wary of supplying a demo boat for test, sure it could make you, alternatively it may ruin you.

I think it all a bit of give and take, the jurnos can't just wander down to their local dealer and borrow a 1/2 million pound boat and go thrash it, they need the manufacturer to supply a yacht and the manufacturer has to be confident that they will be fair in their report and anything negative has to be taken in context.

What some people are looking for is almost a confontational type jurnalistic approach which while entertaining in the short term will ultimately end up with none of the manufacturers prepared to supply yachts for testing and all we will get in the end is just rehashes of press releases and pictures supplied by the yards.

I think most people are able to read between the lines in most reports, on the other hand there are those that take everything as gospel in the same manner a some will only ever consider a boat from the usual big four Brit manufacturers without considering that there is a whole world of boats out there that are not built here and in some cases are better built, perform better and cost less. Take the Irish market as an example, they have no home grown builders and as such you see a lot more different makes from all over europe, they seem more concerned with quality, finish performance and price than badge engineering. Not knocking our builders they build some of the finest boats in the world (but not always) just that sometimes we are a little blinkered in our thinking.

The brit press is still regarded in the industry as the best and most respected but it is a fine line they walk.

Having stated the above of course there is room for improvement and debate such as this is valid and will push some buttons. Everything has its ups and downs, we just need to push them in the right direction without loosing what we already have.
