Been reading the MBM cruise blog. Interested in how they got "Calm Voyager" round from the Solent to North Wales - quite a voyage I should have thought. This vessel is only about three metres longer than our 8.6 Nimbus.

A fortnight ago, we attempted a trip from Poole down to Plymouth, but decided to turn back as we considered the voyage would be too unpleasant in such conditions.

But I assume the MBM crew must have done a vastly longer trip in seas unlikely to be any better - unless "Calm Voyager" was 'shipped' directly to North Wales". I did note a participant of the previous trip had their boat transported back to Swansea by road.

Sorry to say, I doubt the MBM team are going to obtain much recompense for their effort. Do trust the boat crews enjoyed the experience however.

Been reading ot too.
Nice picture of "Jollica" (36 ish Sealine) and Mr and Mrs Gordon Pickering.
The couple are quite new to Boating I bet they have enjoyed the Big Trip.
My Nimbus was not ready else I would have liked to have joined the Event.
It seems a shame not many vessels have taken part.
I have spoken to some likely candidates in the Area and the comment was that a two week gig was a bit too long for some to take the time out.
As we know the weather has been somewhat unpredictable and occasional not nice.
I too, would be interested to know if Calm Voyager made the trip by Sea.

Which model and Year Nimbus do You have PhilipF?

The boat will always (almost) take it - just the crew/skipper's experience. Delivery skippers will do things that most leisure boaters will not even dream of doing. Nothing to do with bravado - just been there, done that got the Tshirt.

Saying that, the weather has played havoc with deliveries around the UK of late and we are just about catching up.

Road transport is more expensive so owners asked that there boat be delivered by sea, but it still gets me when owners say why is my boat not here yet?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm maybe we should charge more?

Hi, we did indeed employ a delivery skipper to take the boat from Portsmouth to Conwy. He left on the tuesday morning and made Falmouth for the night.Next stop was Milford Haven for fuel, and lastly Holyhead. This was the week before last and I understand he did encounter the odd ripple.

It's been a great trip so far, the weather's been kind, seawise, if a little wet. Just keeping an eye on the low pressure system coming in later in the week.

Iv'e never been to keen on this cruise in company lark. All boats have different cruising speeds and if my various crews are anything to go by. One day a bit of rough is ok, the next day it'isnt. Meeting up with folks in different harbours is good fun. You just sort of arrive at will.

But every one seems to have a different idea on times to set off. Our method, is set off about 11 or 12 , maybe 1 pm. It's got nowt to do with tides, just when we got up, then took dog for a walk. Nothing to do with knowing the right time to go. So alright it get's a bit rough for a mile or two.

Surprisingly, if it's been blowing from the SW For a day or two in the SW, the seas are big, but as you are generally going west or NW. There not that big a problem. Not quite suggesting you go out in the biggest SW wind you can find. But though you go up and down quite a bit, it's not that uncomfortable. OK you hold on to the rail and the wheel, to stop you being thrown off the fly bridge. But other than that, theres not to much to it really.

Miserable git. Thats why you've got no mates. On the MBM cruises they have different starting times for groups of boats with different speeds and you choose the group you want to go with or go alone if you want. They leave it up to each individual skipper to decide whether he goes or not and there's no pressure to go if you don't want to. Another good thing about a MBM cruise is that there's always a MBM boat sweeping up at the back in case anyone has any probs which gives confidence to any stragglers

I haave to say that I would love to go on a MBM cruise - the problem I have is that they are all too long - I could never get two weeks out of work - (a loss of £1000's in income if I do ) and also because most are on the south coast it would take me a few days either side of the 2 weeks to get down there and back .....

I guestimated that to go on an MBM cruise I would need to take 3 weeks out and thats pushing it - if there were any delays due to weather it would be nearer a month - just not do able - now if they ever run any from the east coast, Ill be in there like a shot ... but would love to cruise in company for those initial cruises outside of the UK /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

We caught up with the MBM guys in Fecamp and they seemed a pretty good bunch. The one thing that would do me in though is that you are pretty well restricted by the least capable boats. For the inexpericnced skippers though I think they would be a good confidence booster, so from that point of view well worth it. There was a Seawings 35 on the trip as well, don't see many of those around.

Well, Thought ill stick my oar in !!! We are currently on the MBM Ireland cruise and are thoroughly impressed with the set up.
Being new to coastal waters (3 months), we felt the opportunity to make our first sea crossing with the knowledge that the dedicated MBM team had carried out the necessary research and booked all the marinas far in advance, leaving us to concentrate on learning about our boat and developing our sea skills.

I dont think anybody should 'knock' MBM for helping both newbies like us and experienced skippers in expanding their abilities, whilst in the safety of an organised event such as this.

Iam surprised there was such a low take up on the cruise and will be dissapointed if there is no cruise from North Wales next year as we are thoroughly enjoying our time here with our new friends.

So well done the MBM team special thanks to Neale & Stewart, and long may it continue !! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We did a couple of MBM cruises some years back - indeed they were probably the most significant influence on our decision to base our boating in Holland. Must say we thought they were brilliant, very professionally organised and run. But they are, IMHO, something you grow out of. You've had the experience, grown in confidence and want to do things on your own, or at least with a different, smaller group of friends. Having said that, I am surprised how many familiar faces turned up year after year, experienced boaters in capable boats, visiting places they had been to before on the same cruise-in-company arrangements. Never quite understood that.
