Mayday Mirabella 5

There definitely were Mirabella's I,II,III, and IV (maybe not all owned by the same owner but a couple certainly were). They were equally ground breaking in their day being the first 40 odd metre sailing yachts specifcally designed for charter. Atleast one of them was built by concorde yachts in Thailand (III?). I will check our records and see what I can dig up.

The Mirabellas are offered for charter through Mirabella Yachts. The original Mirabella was built in Thailand, by Concorde Yachts (which was created by Mr Vittoria, the owner of the Mirabella) starting in 1988. She is a Bruce Farr designed 40m (132ft) sloop. Initial design work was by one of the founders of Nautor, so she looks like a big Swan. . She was VERY special at the time. She has a fiberglass hull and carbon mast (160ft), which at that time was a big step forward in the superyacht world. She was followed by Philanderer, which was built for another owner. <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mirabellayachts.com/mirabella3/>Mirabella III was launched in 1992, and is a 134 ft sloop. These first three boats shared the same hull mould. Mirabella III has a larger cockpit area than the original Mirabella. Because Philanderer was the second boat built, her yard name was originally Mirabella II, and so that name was never used. There is no Mirabella IV, because the leap up from III to the new boat was so big they decided to skip one number. These are all wonderful boats. Within the luxury charter market they are considered true sailing yachts, compared with some of the others which are more like motor boats with sticks.

Agreed - I never heard a Mayday from M V but I did hear Portland calling as described - and others have confirmed it did happen. So it was probably a mistake on Portlands part during the trial helicopter rescue.

Anyway - at the time it struck a chill into us - thank God that it was not for real.

Good Luck and good sailing.

Hmmm. I think that the web site description needs to be updated, based on the arrival of M V. Thanks for pointing it out.

No, sorry. Probably just a day. The journey has been used for additional trials, and so some people are getting off, while others are getting on. From Portugal it's quickly onto Naples.
