Maybe a silly Q but - how does one stop a Diesel Engine running ?

5 things you should know how to do in a hurry:
  1. Deploy your foresail
  2. Drop your anchor
  3. Bleed the fuel lines
  4. Change a raw water pump impeller
  5. Stop your engine... if there is some kind of electric stop on your engine find out what it acts on and how to operate it manually. Stop solenoids are generally designed to be operated by hand. First time it happened to me it took me an hour to find the bloody thing... I second Resolution's view on the crap Yanmar manuals. They must have commissioned the art class at the Osaka primary school to do the drawings!!

You have a 4108 ? If so, easy to adapt an off the shelf throttle body. The image below is an example, it's a Mercedes OM636 throttle body (on Ebay, brand New, £69.50). All you'd need to make is a plate to fit the square flange on the throttle body and weld a tube to it, the same diameter as the air filter fitting on your intake manifold. Fix the two parts together with a couple of inches of hose. The throttle body take a K&N style air filter. It is usually operated by a Morse cable, so practically impossible for it to close accidentally.

I chose this as an example because it is what is fitted in my boat. Mercedes obviously hadn't heard that shutting off the air supply at the intake would cause the engine to runaway and explode :)

Think why they call it a throttle!
