the worst route i ever sailed was from appledore to ilfracombe, past woolacombe.
it was only 15kt winds thereabout, the wind was s.westerly, but the tidal streams from the irish sea AND the atlantic made the route like a trip through a washing machine.
didnt matter where i pointed myself i was getting swell on the beam.
i attempted it one evening, thought boll-archs to that, went back till the morning after, consulted all the info sources doubly before trying again, and it was just as bad.
portland bill was a walk in the park compared.
it was the one point where i seriously questioned the sanity of my mission from brighton to weston s mare.

imho, being inexperienced, i have chosen to favour what the water is doing before the wind or any other factor.

The water is doing what the wind and tide tell it to do.

When I first moved here I traded in my bow rider for a small Merry Fisher wheel house....and I went out everyday....I wouldn’t look at the forecast nor the sky....I just wanted to be on the water....then one day I set off and got to the channel out of port....and the waves were coming in so fast and big and ugly..... I took a huge chance and in a trough I did the world’s quickest u turn and surfed back in...and went back to my place in port....people were watching. For some reason I didn’t learn my lesson....the lure of the sea was too great. Nowadays, flat calm or I stay home
