max. outboard size for avon

We are considering getting an avon redstart, but are slightly concerned that the maximum outboard size is meant to be 3hp. We've got a Yamaha 5cs (5hp) outboard -can the boat take it?

Absolutely not.
I had one, tried a 4hp. As it's got no proper transom, dinghy bends in the middle, and dunks the outboard. went for 2 hp Johnson after that.

I was advised (by a helpful chap at Ron Hale Marine who was trying to sell me an outboard) that 3.5hp was more than enough. Any larger and there is a risk that the outboard tries to drive itself under the boat, thus bending it in half.

I ended up buying a Suzuki 2.2 and have found it to have ample power for the Redstart, plus it is feather light - easily a one handed job to lift it up to the boat - something to consider as well as power.

I have same avon tried using a 2 not happy with that changed to SeaHorse 4 short shaft no problems at all no bending sit midships or slightly forward and will plane very stable used it for years.

i have a 10ft all-soft avon and a 3.3hp mariner. can't use the motor above 1/2 throttle as it bends the back under. subsequently changed to a hard-transom zodiac and had no further problems.

My Suzuki 2 could bend a Redcrest at too high a throttle setting so I can't see a Redstart being capable of handling anything more powerful.

<font color=blue>Absolutely not, as others have mentioned, not having a true transom it tends to drive itself under. Why not pay the little bit extra and get a dinghy with a proper transom.
