My matsutec ha-102 AIS transponder has arrived from aliexpress - no tracking info at any stage but it arrived on time!

I've recently acquired the boat, and having just removed a rusted car radio from it, I'm loath to permanently install new electronics and watch it corrode over the years.

I'm planning to hook up the AIS just to my Navionics tablet, using WiFi

What do people think about having the ais transponder, aerials and wifi adapter in a single removable box that just needed a 12v connection?
The aerials (VHF and GPS ) would need to be 'stubby' to fit - would that significantly hamper performance?

You are overthinking it. Thousands of boats with stuff in. Ive had mine for 14 years and no issues for stuff Ive installed. The antenna wants to be outside and at least at hand rail level to get 20miles as I do. The gps antenna will work inside

About the worst thing you can do is put a stubby arial on it. Just fit it and forget like everyone else.

I am sure that this has been asked, but I am looking for a low cost AIS transponder for use with Navionics on an Ipad. I don't have a built in plotter, just an android car radio with navionics. the boat is a beneteau 31.7 that is tiller steered and i don't use the chart table much.
I have seen the Matsutec Ha102 and the one with a screen, the HP-528A. The info that i can find is not great, do these support WIFI?

Looking online .....

Matsutec HA-102 Marine AIS receiver and transmitter_Products_Matsutec Brand absorbed Sailing Yacht and Marine electronics

It would appear that WiFi is not supported .... but that's a simple matter to sort.

WiFi4NMEA unit can accept the NMEA 0183 out from any unit and then provide it as USB or WiFi as you decide ... I have the older WiFi2NMEA and for about 45 euros is worth every penny.
The guy who makes them in Portugal, is a yachtowner who wanted a 'better' plexor ..... and is quick to support and has a forum as well.

NMEA4WIFI - 4 x INPUT NMEA 0183 WIFI MULTIPLEXER WITH SEATALK1 INPUT | eBay

I have no connection other than a very satisfied user of the plexor.
